New bat advice please
« on: June 16, 2023, 10:36:37 AM »

Hi, I am looking to purchase a new bat and stunned by the prices. Been researching and found this site which pointed me towards Blank Bats.

I am looking for advice on blank bat shape (B1, B2, B4, B14 or B20) for the type of batter (or not) I am:
 - I bat 10 or 11 for League 2s side or middle order when I play for League 3s side so looking to spend close to £200 for the grade.
 - I am a punch player, not a free flowing stroke maker, who typically checks his shots rather than full follow through. I like to punch square of the wicket or clip off my legs and occasionally hit down the ground where i need it to stay hit. There are no draws in the league I play, it is straight limited overs.
 - My current bat is 2lb 10 which is heavier than i would like. I like a really light bat in my hands.

Normally I would insist on picking up a bat to try it out but what is in stock locally is so poor and so expensive I am now branching out to online but looking for help.

For those who have used, which of the blank bats shapes would suit me best?

Also, can anyone confirm if they are still made by the fella that used to work at Newberry?

Sorry for all the questions in my first post but hope you can help.

Hi, you are best speaking to Tai who can answer your questions...

But the BB bats are usually excellent.

I used a B4 - very slightly shorter blade, nice full profile, light pickup. You might also like the B1, very full shape and plenty coverage.

Unless you are absolutely sold on BlankBats, you would be worth having a chat with @Red Ink Cricket as John's bats will be well within your price range and he makes a fantastic bat.

Thanks for the feedback.

Waiting to hear back from blank bats to see what they advise but will look up red ink as well.

For those who have used a blank bat - what mainstream bat maker would you compare the handle shape to? I understand they are oval but oval handles vary greatly by brand.

eg. I cannot stand the feel of the Gunn and Moore bats that are currently sold as the handle is too thin at top and the shape feels odd on my bottom hand. By contrast, the Kookaburra bat handles feel about perfect to me. Both are advertised as oval handle.

I would suggest going and picking up bats  if handle shape is of importance to you. Handles differ from bat to bat in my experience

I think it is no secret that BB are sourced from a number of different suppliers.
The ones made by Tim Keeley will have his slightly thinner oval half oval handle, not to dissimilar to the SG/kook ones (I had a look at one of Sam Curran's rejects the other day... Not my cup of tea, but that is a different story.)

Is there a rumour they are not? Their website is still up and I sent a message Thursday and got an automate response; figure a full response could take longer with a small operation but interested to hear if they are no longer an option?

They are still very much in operation, no need to worry about that.

Thanks Buzz - if I can get one with a kook style handle then I will be very happy.
