Title: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 04, 2011, 10:41:59 PM
As some of you may, or may not know, I was due to visit Hawk tomorrow morning. However due to a mate of mine with the transport being roped into some sort of family commitment (his wife said no) I had no option but to call Mike @ Hawk and order blind.

Long story short, ordered the following:

X10 Pro Pads
X10 Pro Gloves
Players Edition Gloves
Pro Thigh Pad Set

I am over the moon with my choice, Mike was easy to deal with and offered some suggestions. One being me taking the pads he sent for the Wisden Good Gear Guide (I will be combing these for DNA so we can find the idiot 'pro' who wrote those absolutely shocking reviews)

Hawk X10 Pro Batting Pads (not too fussed about the wear at the bottom, rubs off easy so practically new)

Hawk Pro X10 Gloves w/ Pittard Palms
(http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j411/justnotcricket86/IMG-20110304-00060.jpg)

Hawk Players Edition Gloves w/ Pittard Palms
(http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j411/justnotcricket86/IMG-20110304-00058.jpg)

Pro Thigh Pad Set (Got this in a Youth being a short (No Swearing Please), and very pleased as any bigger would be massive)

The pads sit nice and low a la Ian Bell, small top hats and the fit is wonderful. Very light as well, everything just fits well together.

Sorry for the non-paparazzi quality photos, used a Blackberry. Would recommend going to Hawk about some softs, would have liked to see their bats but think Matt @ H4L has me covered there!

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Cheers

Will

Looks nice mate. :) - I think we should have a comparing pads thread, so we can really have a think about what the best pads are out there. I'm liking the SS/Newb GT style at the moment, but these look nice, and if the fit is as good as you say then it may well be worth the investment (How much do these retail for?)! :D

Pidge - SS make it all anyway mate I think, but I have only just noticed that yeah! Well happy

Reds - It's not all here yet mate, off on my jollies next week so picking up the last few buts then will share the love

Johan - They retail at £65 mate, but they were Wisden ones, so didn't pay that. Got the lot for £150

Yeah, to echo what Will said, their Keeping Gloves are similar to the SS Gloves we both have mate. I hadn't really felt the gloves, but they are bloody soft and great gloves!! Bit of a bargain there Will ;) - I think I got mine for in the same region pricewise so I am chuffed.
I think £65 seems reasonable for those if they are good quality, could make a direct comparison to Ayrteks with Aaron.. :)

I have the SS Players Keeping Gloves as well Johan, they are the same as Hawk and Warsop

Dave, just for you mate...they are really small. They fit so well and think I am as nearly as fussy as you

Iam sure you can get the same pad with different logo on for much cheaper around 50 pound

tell you what though there good looking pads and look to sit very well

small mens are they??

Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 04, 2011, 10:58:06 PM
I didn't pay £65 for them Dave, they whole lot retails at £210ish, I got it all for £150. Hence the reason I am so happy with them. They sit perfectly, as if they are custom.

No they are Mens size mate. Just nice and compact, and with the extra padding on calves, they are still light as a feather
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: peplow on March 04, 2011, 11:09:52 PM
would you think i would be small mens or youths will? 5ft 8.5 and like small fitting pads...
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 04, 2011, 11:13:32 PM
Well to be honest mate, these sit so low and they are regular mens...I can't say. Small men's would probably be slightly snugger so go for them. I will measure these up tomorrow and let you know what they are. I would have done it for you when I was there but like I say, couldn't make it.

I would take a punt on Small Mens, only going to be an inch in it mate and you can always adjust by keeping the bottom strap nice and loose

Yeah no problem :) i can always swap then over,

may even splash out on redback softs, havent decided yet!

Are you not a Newbs man? Can't recommend these enough mate, absolute class

Not much more to get for the season now, only the Masuri lid, Ayrtek bag and some keeping pads. Forgot to order the Hawk ones on the phone! Will have a quick look around before ordering though....

Then wait for the new Hattori and jobs a goodun

What have you got at the moment then?
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: peplow on March 04, 2011, 11:25:13 PM
Newbery camo pads and gloves, but they are probably being sold, me and mike came to an arrangement. and so will buy some others....just undecided on whether to fork out for newberys, go for hawks or redbacks as all are simply classy and are good.
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...

which redbacks would you go for sam

Hawk yourself up mate, you won't regret it.

We are all guilty of over thinking things on this forum. Our best bat wears Aero P1 pads, some bashed up Bradbury gloves and a butter dish for a box. Don't get me wrong, I love the banter on this forum and have met some bloody top people, but at the end of the day, we analyse things too much I think.

I took a risk buying blind with Hawk, and couldn't have asked for a better fit for gloves, thigh pads, and pads. I even paid £35 for them keeping gloves I got from you without even trying them on. Just lucky it's worked out for me.

Just crack on mate and don't do your head in about it!

yeah its the fit thats matters, i am just unsure which to go with to get the best fit!

I would go for traditional ones dave.

your right iam fussy and in the end i only keep what i use and only use 1 pair of pads mate..

Got some sales coming up soon helmets pads gloves and a few bats

NS agree it amazing the fit of most pads are poor at our height

yeah i am fairly fussy about it! Think i wil lsee if i can sell the newberys then go from there in terms of budget!

The Hawk softs look quite decent!
And if they're anything like their bats in quality then worth considering.

Post by: procricket on March 04, 2011, 11:41:25 PM
tried a pair on last year very good my only drama Pete out here is i need to try pads on before i buy or get the measurements or there just no good for me.

I likw softs but it get tiresome buying softs only to find they do not fit proper

Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 04, 2011, 11:42:38 PM
They are top Pete, top level protection, not that I am facing 90mph, but nice to have should the occasion arise. I like to have nice gear, and these will do me for a while now. Bit squeeky , but the Wisden Test chap has started wearing them in for me already, nice of him!

By the way...what's the best way to stop the bloody things from sounding like I have a mouse in my sock? Any ideas?

Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: peplow on March 04, 2011, 11:43:45 PM
thinking the top hat may be too big on these bad boys, even in smaller sizes, compared to newberys/redbacks... looks large, what would you say justnot average size?
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 04, 2011, 11:45:51 PM
Sam - I was going to say that. They look kook style when it comes to top hat, but I assure you, they are really small.

That's been my biggest thing about buying pads. Making sure they have small top hats. It may be the angle and canes making them look bigger, but they are small.

The player's gloves look very very good and as i love sausage gloves I'm going to get a pair myself, not often i come across some quality gloves which i like.

Kookaburra worst pads for big hats

i need my pads to be exactly 39 cm from arch to middle of the knee

The top hat part looks on the small side to me or smaller than what id class as standard.
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: peplow on March 04, 2011, 11:49:41 PM
yeah on webby they look newbery-esque tiny! but your bigs made them look more kook! But good to hear!
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 04, 2011, 11:53:46 PM
I was thinking that when I took them mate. I always tend to judge how big the hats are by looking at the back of the pads...it works...

I would have sent them straight back if they were big mate. The pics dont give a true angle really. Also, the straps are all done tighter than how I would wear them? Making below the knee look narrow with the roll and hat wide...if you follow me...they are wide low sitting when I wear them, but don't look that way when strapped up for pics
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: Watsontotty on March 04, 2011, 11:58:18 PM
Being 6ft 4" i actually want a big top hat on a pad as i find some pads are not big enough and short fitting so almost always need to go for osm. My big thing is how they fit around the league and the weight, i hate pads which are too wide and bulky and heavy.
Title: Re: My New Hawk Gear...
Post by: justnotcricket86 on March 05, 2011, 12:02:11 AM
I agree mate, these things feel custom to be honest! Guess I have hit lucky with the length and width.

They do have some extra padding on the calves, but they are very light. I will TRY and weigh them tomorrow, jamfreg wants to know so will do my best

On another note, the thigh pad set is great. The inner has a bloody long chord, think I will tie it up and snip it.

Any tips on getting rid of the squeek?

softens the leather and stops the squeak but just a little at a time though and watch if your team mates are around as they may get the wrong idea.

on the part which is causing the squeak ! it helps soften the leather a bit and stops the squeaking

had or should say have a set of the Canterbury pads which used to squeak something rotten and it helped sort them out but i didn't use them much as i dint like the width way too bulky which is a shame.

Yes Matt, I know we talked about that before but couldn't get down there tomorrow. It's probably a blessing, as I didn't want to shell out for another bat and probably would have!

Really happy with my gear though, the Players sausage gloves are slightly more bulky, but still a lovely fit. So comfy aint they!

Yeh - that's what I meant!
Seriously both were hit out of the middle. The first he would have lost several fingers if he had of tried to catch it.
And with the second shocked everyone with how fast it travelled....including me!
But ceertainly proved to me what a middle Hawks have.

think the start price is £175 atm

Nah not lexx, cant remember their name now and I've deleted their messages. However the reason why they're selling it is due to them buying two bats at the same time and he's trying to sell one. I think he said that he got them fairly recently but decided to have the old stickers put on the bat as he thought they looked better. It's a Hawk Xbow2 Players.

haha well the Players edition I guess, it has smaller toe and shoulders to give more 'meat' where it's needed.

Of the Xbow2 bats anyway...

G10 is a big big bat and the X10 is a more traditional shaped bat.

Bit of an update, netted with my new gear tonight. Used both pairs of gloves and can't choose between them. Wore a few on the thigh pads and pads and didn't feel a thing at around 75ish. Pads are nice and light as well.

Pads are a bit squeeky but they will become more relaxed with use and some vaseline on the trim at the bottom.

happy as larry to sum up :)

They are a little more bulky than the x10 pros but are so comfy and still pretty light.

Going to order the keeping pads after the holiday as well
