Just a net I had today, equivalent speeds varied from about 50 - 85mph :)
-
you plant you front foot and when on the leg side have to come round it causing movement in your head and you being off balance
go to 6.47 and freeze look at the position your in my point above mate
you play some nice drives though i guess that your strength with the guard you take
-
who is this dude
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3Z_uS3HPOA&feature=autoplay&list=ULEificggG08I&index=2&playnext=2
that what cricket is all about he seems to be enjoying himself
-
50-85 Lol more like 40-70 odd bud, your standing too far outside leg stump and you never once got your pad outside the line, you stayed leg side of the ball almost every shot. From a quick look id fancy LBW a fair bit ?
-
From your vid I would say you are very rigid no fluidity to your moves and if I was still bowling quick I would fancy the short stuff or from your stance and movement bowl from wide on the crease at the stumps as that would create a nice gate with your technique
-
Why do you bat so far outside leg? I would love to bowl at off stump and swing it away, if I were bowling to you.
-
Dave that is our 3rds skipper - Pagey :)
The reason I was so far outside leg is there are no marking on the ground so I just stood where I presumed leg was. Roco you're right, the only times I was bowled last year was through the gate - any tips?
Rich, because it is 18 yards 69mph gives you them same reaction time as if you were to face 84.9mph.
-
I thought through the gate would be a top one I've still got it :):):)
You have to get your foot closer to the ball as I assume if the ball is around or just outside off you will play with your hands and not get your head or foot near the line of the ball?
If so you need to get your front foot closer to the ball as I said or just leave anything you can't get your foot to
-
So as first said colesy stop planting your foot
you plant and as roco says you play with your hands
you have a good eye but if you moved your front leg more you would be more solid
-
With regards to where you are standing while netting always have some one help you take guard. This means that you will learn where your off stump is and wont get bowled leaving one like you did. I always got taught net like you were in a game and make it meaning full by giving your self an objective to achive. Hope this helps a little
-
Lol yeah was a surprise to me when that one I left I got bowled. Highlighted that I was so far away from my normal guard.
Thanks all for the early tips, will work on it in nets.
-
Nice technique colesy nothing too wrong there, just take a piece of chalk with you next time to mark your guard. You obviously pick the ball up ok when at slow or fast speed, maybe just try hitting through the ball a bit more will give you more fluidity. A lot of guys make a case for front foot forward etc but dont forget you can hit of the back foot too, as the back foot drive is a shot not a lot of guys ever learn. And the most important thing ever which i hear the top cricket coaches say is "See ball, hit ball" and you seem to do that ok.
-
Although for the majority of the time you are effective in your result in terms of placement and timing, it just looks all too jerky and un-natural. You look particularly more comfortable against spin but a tip would be to focus about getting a bigger stride forward to the quickies and rocking back cutting/pulling the spin. Looks a promising technique.
-
Some nice shots there Colsy, setup looks pretty good.....
id suggest keeping your back straighter i.e bend at the hips
-
Thanks keysersolze, Canners and niceonechoppy. I'm quite good with the backfoot drive, just didn't get the opportunity to play it today. How can you improve fluidity and hitting through the ball?
-
Fluidity is gained by not thinking as much as it seems may be wrong that you are thinking bat here front foot here back foot here etc needs to be natural then will become fluid
Hitting through the ball is just having the confidence to go full throttle at a shot rather than half hearted
-
I'll start with the stance. Slightly bend the knees more so you're back is straight and feel comfortable in your stance, which can be shoulder width apart. A rhythmical backswing could probably start from just below the hips, raise to a suitable level and play your stroke from there.
I think the main thing is to be comfortable with whatever you do, as there are some un-natural movements in cricket. You have a good fundamental technique, just minor things you can work on to improve.
-
Thanks for all the comments
-
Hya mate, have you thought about having a trigger movement of some sort?
It just seems that with you batting so far outside leg, that your maybe defending the balls that you could be looking to work away on the legside? It might just be the camera angle though.
Also, with batting so far outside leg it doesn't allow a great amount of strokeplay outside the off stump, which means you could miss out again, and also you might find yourself driving through the covers off middle stick, which can be very risky!!
May i suggest starting with either a leg guard, or taking two, and getting your feet moving across to middle as your trigger movement, this may stop your foot being planted so early, allowing more shots to come into the equation?
I used to plant my foot, and just a small trigger movement to get me moving more, and a lot of practice soon sorted me out and i feel a lot more comfortable at the crease!
Like i said it could just be the camera angle or something! But hope this helps!
-
trigger movements if there not a natural way do not start with them just bat on middle stump mate or two.
-
Just seen you get bowled when you left it, that could be because you don't have an idea where your off stick is, which could be to do with your stance and where you stand as well foot movement!
Sorry if im being picky, just trying to help mate as you strike the ball well!
-
That was because I was unknowingly standing a foot outside off ;)
-
i like your technique, its very simple bat comes down very straight and you time the ball well, it can be difficult not knowing where your standing in the nets....
i dont think youd have left that one if you were batting on your correct guard
-
the truth is most of the youtube video on here no disprespect most seem to be acting to look technically good for the camera
instead of playing your natural game..
look at a few of the videos they all look staged with poor balance but a high top elbow...
Not knocking anybody as a coach the last thing you say should be positive so
i have seen your cover drive in the video a thing of beauty mate
-
I find it alryt batting it nets in regards to getting the correct guard? Surely you can look back before every ball and check your batting in line with the stump you have selected as your guard?
I know it can be hard to mark it, but you can still arrange your feet in line with the stump your batting on?
-
Looks good to me Joe. Some very nice shots in there. Only thing i would say is try to be a bit lighter on your feet, sometime you look a little flat footed, try a be more on your toes. Other thing I noticed it your first movement is with your front foot and you back foot hardly moves. Try going back and across as your trigger movement. This will not only get your more in line but will also make you lighter on your feet.
Hope that makes sense ? Looks good though and these are only minor points to work on. How old are you Joe ?
-
I used to press on my front foot, I'll try the back and across one and see how I get in. 17 Kieron.
-
Very good for 17 Joe. It may not work for you Joe, but most players go back and across. Worth trying now in the nets.
-
Yeah watching it back now every shot I have similar (no) movement no matter where the ball pitches, I use my hands a lot more than I thought I did.
-
Hi Colesy, hitting through the ball!!! You have the eye to hand coordination to get bat on ball and you pick the line and length up ok from watching the video, and what i have seen the top coach at the cricket centre where i work do is just set the bowling machine up and get the player to just hit through the ball when playing their strokes. Most of the good batsmen finish with their bat over their head with the end of the handle pointing in the direction the ball has just gone gone. It takes a while and the stumps will get clattered a few times but once you get it mastered it will be second nature. Yeah it sounds easier than it is but lets be honest you have good technique and no glaring faults just do what works for you and find your own game and it will all fall into place.
-
Might just be the camera angle but I'm sure I saw some solid forward defensive shots to balls on or outside leg stump?
-
NNNNNNnoooooooooooo not the trigger!! don't do it!! there is no need!!
Can I ask, did you feel like you benefited from that session, or was it just a bit of fun?
I would sack you feeder and get someone else who will ensure you are set up right.
I have a few thoughts, they are a based on a way to help you hit through the ball like Keysersolze says above, you will get a pm in a while
-
Personally that is a better session than I normally have, I was trying to be properly with the odd bit of fun chucked in like the sweeps and lofted drives. I go into most net sessions with the mindset of valuing my wicket so if I don't get bowled or plum LBW then I am reasonably happy as you will get the odd big shot you miss-time however I am trying to reduce these and judge the 'right ball' better.
-
Before the trigger I think triggers are being mentioned as you were not set up right so not in line.
-
agree with Buzz if a trigger is not in your game then do not bring it in it could knock everything out
I have seen a former County under 17 player start with a trigger now he is playing 3rd team cricket and looks very poor indeed.
Triggers only work if there brought in by a very highly experienced and qualified coach...
Most triggers are natural you do not want to start going there you look fine mate
-
i bet your a medium pace bully the wy u plant that front foot lol get u in trouble with qicker bowling lol ;)
you fall over and dont get ur back foot across hence why u always hit inside the ball and it goes midwickety rater than straight however at 3.46 around that time you play a beaut cover drive and then 4.4 lovely off drive start getting that back foot across rather than just the front if you naturally have that trigger, and it will allow you to start playing better off the back foot to quick bowlersaswell, i had the same problem as you also have very hard handed...
and aso lean forward slightly in stance will allo you to get your foot to the pitch of the ball rather than planting other than that good mate
-
also dont face too quick as you really dont look ready as you stay so leg side of the ball and throw ur hands at it
-
Joe, you already have a natural trigger movement as do 99% of the players in the world. Just think your front foot trigger gets you into trouble a bit.
Bit on trigger movement here http://www.pitchvision.com/trigger-movements
-
Cheers Aidy. I'm not a fan of fast bowling, as you can tell. I much prefer spin and working it into gaps but it is true that I play with my hands - moreso that I had realised and I definitely need to get a bigger stride.
Thanks Kieron
-
i think you made more runs than most other forum members last season didnt you joe!?
maybe just a little far outside leg stump set up wise but you have a nice technique and im sure you will go from strength to strength!
-
To be fair mate I probably batted more than most other forum members ;)
-
haha, i can remember you getting at least 2 tons and making 1000+ runs. great achievement for one season no matter how many times you batted!
-
Thanks mate :)
-
i expect 2000 runs from you this year, even if you have to bat 80 times to get them!
-
whoever you are theres always room for improvement(I have plenty of room for improvement :'( i'm 35)
-
Lol one of my aims is to get a 150 and claim that trophy from Buzz ;)
I agree pacman I've worked hard at cricket for the entire time I've played the game and evidently room for improvement! It means I get to play more though ;)
-
Glad you lot can't see my revised technique if you don't like triggers as mine is HUGE but I scored 200 league runs first half of the season but felt uncomfortable so changed technique to an old one and scored 500+ league runs second half so worked but I agre if a trigger is not natural be careful as you can be on the move when the ball has been bowled which can make you late on shots but hey it may be worth a go
