This rather puts it into perspective. The next time we reject a bat purely on it not having perfect grains, remember this one :)

8?

Got my bat back from refurb and was finally able to see how many grains it has. 8 evenly spaces and straight. Once they get going they sure take some beating!
I love the puma world cup gear. Bought my iridium 5000 gloves a few days before it all came out, otherwise I'd have the tricks gloves
-
Probably better remembering its the player not the bat..
-
Nothing wrong with eight grained bats!!!! You can have as many grains as you like but you still have to have the ability to see ball, hit ball!!!!!
-
Who can find the worse grains on a pros bat?
-
i have seen it all now what wrong with his bats....
Look at most pro's bat not that many use mega grained bats at all have a look seriously not many do at all .
And most do not have massive bats either weighting in at 2lb 7oz either most use tooth pick looking bats
-
They may look like tooth picks, but that is because of the camera angles, once they zoom in, you can see that the edges are easily 32-37mm or even bigger. I look at Ponting's bat and it looks small from a distance, but once you see pictures of it close up, it is clearly quite large, the pictuures also have ponting in them so that is where I get my perspective. All about perspective

rubbish most top class players do not weild big beast most look bigger with the angle mate.
I looked at a Strauss bat and on telly they look quite big but in truth there not much bigger than average.
Some like Kholi use sleepers but then look at the spine
I agree there on average a little bigger but most do not use anything out of the ordinary.
The prestige players get what they want but lower down the pecking order the county players get no better than what most of us get unless they source them for other companys and get there labels on them.
I rejected a bat once because it was to big for it weight felt all wrong good job uncle pete wanted it and the grain thing in terms of greade most use grade 2 or 3 according to js wrights

That's a good game, I wonder what players 20 years ago had?
I assume someone will be able to provide some info on changes in willow growth and preferences because I have no idea. ???
-
Agree think I remember reading Botham talking about selecting bats 8-10 grains was his preference

completely agree with you Dave, the majority of county players will have standard bats from their bat sponsors and the top county players will have custom made bats which are branded with different stickers

There is an interview with Mike Hussey talking to Ian Healey about choosing bats on the Inside the Ashes DVD, I think the bat is around 10 grains and 2lb81/2oz.

Are you so desperate to get me to bite that you are now even arguing with things I don't say? :D
I think everyone else has understood the point of this thread, but just to make it clear to you Dave, I noticed that despite it not having 25 ruler straight grains, some how he hit an international 100 with it today. Some of us, myself included, should remember that more often.
-
And if you read good maybe i did not put my point across which others agreed with not many pro use bats with 25 grains....
I agreed with your point big lad..
Maybe wrongly put but if you read you will see my point as you put it others did.

I have one Pro bat that looks absolutely cr@p but goes like a rocket on steroids!
Will try to snap a couple of pics on the iphone later
-
I've got a pro's Kookaburra, has 8 grains with a few blemishes! Not a looker by any means but its very big for its weight and goes like a train!
-
similar to my now defunct ss it was 2lb 6oz dried to the max and 9 grains with a few blemishes yet as good as some more illustrious bats and i used it for over 70 per cent of cricket last year

Have you used the flintoff puma yet pete?
Used my bat for the first time after refurb tonight and was pleased to see that it still goes like a f*cking train!
-
Is that with the new anti scuff liam? Ow and why couldn't you see what grains it had before?
-
Not used the Flintoff bat yet......too many bats and not enough nets!! :(
The bat with the rubbish grains but goes as well as any Grade 1 I have used is a Malik hand made for a Pakistan International.
Pics are to follow

I'd happily take your Flintoff bat on loan to give it a go! It will need a bit of exercise!
-
Needs knocking in before anything else fella!
-
Well I would offer to do that, but its a pet hate of mine!
-
That Malik must go like a train, though it doesn't look very pretty...I guess possibly made for Azhar Ali? :)
-
Ok detective johan! ;)
And yes, it shocked me when I got it.
Just goes to prove that we shouldn't go on looks alone!

How did you find that out ?
-
after receiving my GN Oblivion today, i agree that no. of grains, looks are not the most important bit. It is the performance that counts.
But bats like my BlackCat Shadow, GM Icon Original and Charlie French are spoiling me. Looks and performance.....

How did you find that out ?
Johan likes to know where every bat comes from, I have heard he has pictures of all pro bats on his ball so he can run a comparison.
