Hello boys,
I was just wondering if many of you Laver owners (or know someone who owns one) have/has been hit by customs charges as it does mention it on the laver and wood site.
Cheers in advance.
-
Yes, cost me about £30
-
Right, was that for both your lavers or just one of them?
-
Not recieved any on my orders, James tends to mark the value of the bats down lower on the paperwork to try to avoid excessive costs.
-
Not had them yet but some more on the way so hope to be lucky.
-
Ok, as I'm thinking of getting a PB but an extra £30 on top of that would really put it out of the equation. It's a shame really.
-
I didn't, he put the value as that of the cleft and handle. So around £50.
Customs is hit and miss, I've imported £1000 worth of bats before and not got charged. However managed to get charged for a £25 ipod!
-
I have never personally been charged by customs, 5 or six bats from Pakistan have had no charges. And from different sellers too.
-
So what you guys are saying is it's a bit hit and miss? I might ask him to do what he did for you Tom.
-
I have heard the following advice when having an item sent:
~Ask Seller likelihood of his customers getting charged, gives a fair idea of whether the courier he uses bypasses the customs tax- E.g Basil
~Get them to declare item as gift
~ Get them to put a false value or minimum price on the good.
-
Right, cheers mate. TBH i think james will know what he's doing!
-
I got charged with a £55 customs for my BAS which arrived by courier.
No charge for my Screaming Cat (from Aus) and D&P from SA. Maybe because they came via normal recorded / 1st class post.
If you are getting the bat declared as a gift to avoid customs, them the declared value cannot exceed £36. which means you cannot get the bat insured for £200 but have a declared value of £36. In case the bat is lost in the post, you can only claim £36.
The customs charge is not related to the value declared on the invoiced value. HMRC have their own guide to what maybe a fair selling price from that particular item. Eg.: though my BAS bats were invocied at £150 the customs was charged assuming value of each bat to be £124.50 or so.
I think it makes sense to get the bats by post (and wait for 3-4 more days) than paying £30 more to get the bat in 2 days.
-
Oh forgot to mention. There is a mention of the customs charge on quantum crickets website who were the first authorized stockist/associates of L&W in the UK.
I recall seeing a figure of £25 on it.
-

I got both at the same time, so it was £30 for both (i.e. NOT £30 each)
-
I know the question is aimed more for the UK guys but so that the Aussie guys know, I had two bats come from James at different times, first one broke due to storm damage, and had no issues with Australian Customs at all. Also only took 3 days to get to Melbourne from New Zealand.

With Australia, there is no GST charged on parcels under the value of $1000. So unless you have to pay for further inspection/treatment, you won't get charged by Australian customs unless you're importing quite a lot of stuff.
-
Tom, how would you rate your Laver now after some use? Really interested in getting one.
-
does anyone know how long it takes for a bat to get from new zealand to england? im eagerly awaiting my new private bin that james has made for me
-
I sent a pair of pads over (NZ) there this summer took 10 days . . .so might be same in reverse?
-
I have received a PB from James a couple of years ago, and a Firefly and Churchill last year.
Did not get any charge from customs. But dont think it took too long.
I remember thinking that one of them took a couple of days longer than I expected. But dont worry mate - have a little patience!
If James has confirmed that he has sent you PB, then figure on it getting to you in a weeks time. Then if it arrives sooner, it will be a nice surprise!
BTW, he makes awesome bats mate!!
-
Guys, sorry to bump up an old topic, but I am having a bat imported from New Zealand and wonder will the £25gbp charged be on top of parcelforce's administrative charges?
-
Depends how much they declare the bat value for
-
the import duty will be 20% of the declared value of the bat, if it is a new item.
-
Didn't Laver find a way to avoid customs charges?... I'm sure I remember something like that when they were a sponsor
-
I bought mine 2 years ago, got stung £50 to release them to the UK, that was a SR and a Legend.

Laver set up a presence in the UK and effectively the shipping was an inter-company transfer which has a different tax status. The UK distributor then posted them out from their location.

Theyve stopped doing this now. A quote from James as I got hit for £23
"We have worked out a way of using DHL now to charge the customs charges back
to us but your bat missed that trial shipment"
-
Same here, I got charged £23 from customs, but a good proportion of this was Parcelforce handling fees!
The bat itself (being an expensive bit of wood and my being used to the 12/13 grain beauties from SS or CA back in 2011) is okay looking, no blemishes but 7 straightish grains. What surprised me most was that my custom specs weren't quite as I had asked for, the middle isn't as low, but the pure scale, size and pickup of a bat weighing 2,8 is incredible. I have read a bit on the forum about Lavers gaining weight over time, but I really hope mine doesn't, as although it looks a 3lb beast to the eye I certainly wont score any runs with a bat weighing that much!
I have also read that performance is somewhat muted at first with Laver & Wood bats and I trust that mine will eventually 'bloom'- despite a good few hours of knocking in, and a net session last night, it still sounds almost tinny (I didn't go for the carbon handle, but the C10 insert). The vibrations at the upper end of the middle (several inches below the stickers) are crazy, almost like you have toed the ball.
I haven't yet posted a full review as I want to give this bat a chance to develop - I haven't quite declared it an expensive dud just yet.
-
I don't know about you, but if I don't get what I asked for when I pay a lot of money for a very expensive bat I make a point of contacting the maker and complaining immediately.

I'd do exactly the same, I'd make sure they knew I was unsatisfied.

With the Lavers gaining weight, can this be helped by waxing the bat all over as soon as you get it? Surely wax helps keep the moisture out as must as it does stop letting it in?
-
Laver contacted me regarding the 'weight gain' issue. I purchased a Private Bin custom bat six weeks ago and its being delivered on Tuesday 5th Aug. In a nutshell i was told my bat was taking so long to produce because they needed to take a little more moist out of the cleft they had chosen. He also said that they bat won't gain weight because of the 'special waxing' they put on it (highly likely not special at all, just probably similar to Salix Bat Wax). He also said that if the bat is kept indoors and out of a dampish environment then it won't gain weight. Well, all remains to be seen.
Regards Customs, I have just received a bill from Parcelforce for £26.29 which i have had to pay to get the parcel released. Well there ya go.
-
What handle did you go for mate?
-
C-10 handle. Requested super light pick-up, no concaving, and a weight of around 2.5lb-2.6lb. So, we shall see what arrives. No pics from L&W before they posted it, so its a bit of a mystery parcel.
