I'm going to save up towards a set of (hand) bat making tools and just wondered if anyone could give me a rough price guide for what I'll need.
Drawknife
Spokeshave
No4 and No6 travisher
Round bottom plane
Flat bottom plane
Rasp
Sturdy soft grip vice
I'm half way saved for a decent sized shed/workshop and a good bench :)
Cheers

Drawknife - £30 (Ebay)
Spokeshave - couple of £ each on the Bay
No4 and No6 travisher - £30-40 each
Round bottom plane - £10-15 on ebay if you find one
Flat bottom plane - £12 tool station (ebay for wooden ones)
Rasp- £10 tool station
Sturdy soft grip vice - vice can be around £50 for a good one and the grip things are around £3
Hope this is what you wanted :P

Thanks

fairly expensive unless your gonna take it up properly. I do fancy having a go at shaping a part made though
-
you can shape one with just a plane and spokeshave and some sanding
its hard but comes out alright
-
used a tavinsher yesterday to profile a bat not as easy as it looks.
didnt help with it being a tad blunt tho.
but cheers to tom for lending me it.

As a clamp, would a workmate bench with a few grips/pads on it work OK?
-
Not realy a sturdy bench i think is best mate with a attached vice mate
it can get quite tuff with the drawknife
-
Yeah thought that might be the case. Managed to make an art sculpture using it but that was only using small gouges and the like.
What would be the tools that you really need to get started on shaping a premade? From what I've read seems like a drawknife, plane and a travisher should be Ok (along with bench etc).
