Title: Shortening my approach.

Hello guys, looking for the advice of the spinners on the forum today.
At training yesterday I decided to scrap my current run up to see how my drive into the crease affected my action. The answer was A LOT. I came off one step and bowled about 5 overs and found consistency, accuracy and even more drift and spin than before. I bowl leg spin and if im honest it was very wayward before i changed my release/action recently. I just wanted to know how/if anyone has shortened their approach in the past and what factors did they consider. I can't be bowling off one step come Sunday afternoon haha

I used to run in from about a mile out and stutter cause i have such a big stride but then came off 5 steps and re built until i found a comfy distance to run in off and has worked ever since

i've got the same problem atm mate. Started bowling leg spin this season, bored of my medium pacers getting whacked lol

I'd say experiment lots! took me 5/6 weeks of indoor nets to find an approach that 'felt right'
The other obvious thing is keep practising, i'm gonna go and do an hour or so's bowling today at the nets with my coach (younger brother lol)

My approach is about 6 paces which I walk up at a slight angle then send a ball down. Not a fan of running or jogging in a la Afridi.

I need to find my approach again. This season I'll be bowling a fair bit however I've only bowled a couple of overs in the last couple of seasons and that's when we've had a limited approach such as a 6's tournament.

I used to bowl a bit of medium-fast stuff off about 20strides but with our nets we only have a limited run up of about 3/4 strides so at the moment I've got no idea what I should be running in at. Obviously I still to have a bit of pace, but also with only having a smaller run-up in nets this season I've been bowling a lot of variations which have been working well, however I feel that if I have a bigger run up I may lose the consistency in them. It's obviously something I've got to practice however what I really want is a coach or something to watch me and give me some pointers.

Take a look at the greatest bowler of this century for me. His approach was very good. Shane Warne.

What you need to do is get out into outdoor nets and mark something out. Most people at our level bowl off way to long a run. I've been guilty too. I used to mark out a run up that was a walk of 18 paces from the wicket, but had terrible consistency. I now come off a distance that is a walk of 10 and am much more consistent. You don't get quite as much momentum, but it makes a difference, but control is far more important.

Thanks guys I'm going down Tonight to work on a sensible slow approach. Even if it's two steps it will be netter than posing in the delivery stance waiting for the batter to look up haha

just had an hour session, mainly bowling. Found that 5 paces worked best, need to work on my length, dragging too many down atm.

My old approach was 6 steps and a big drive into the crease. Found myself bowling a very hard ball and flat as well. Big big turn but no drift or air. Was like bowling medium pace leg cutters. Long hops as well

thats what i started to do at nets in the first few weeks so I slowed my approach down slightly, i get a nice flight, just tend to drag 1 or 2 an over down. Just gonna practise hard for the next few weeks
