Was just looking at my match bat and tapping up a ball on it and I noticed that the middle sounds very odd. Right in the centre of the bat it sounds very metallic whereas everywhere else it sounds as it should.
The bat still goes like an absolute train but I was just wondering if anyone could explain why the middle sounds so tinny?

i had this on my fusion which went very well!
Its not a sign of an internal crack is it?
-
I hope not!
-
delamination i think you will find. ..
-
Yeah sounds like it, not a big deal, will still go like a train like you say! But just sounds a bit odd!
-
What bat is it?
-
A Tim Keeley special.
-
It's actually a good sign. From what I've heard
-
what's delamination?
-
Bits or strips come away from the core of the bat. Not one for to answer really. Where's norbs when u need him.
-
De-lamination is the hard surface splitting from the willow underneath and leaving a gap between the 2, usually fatal for bats as a repair makes the blade dead.
It is nearly impossible to tell if your bat has a problem or not from the description as it is subjective, push down on the spot to see if there is movement for a de-lamination check.
-
when the hard face of the bat (the crust) becomes loose and starts to disintrigate,
-
If u look at tendulkars bat the one he's used for 15 centuries that has a delaminated face. Can someone post a pic. There are craters on the face . Or are my eyes playing up.
-
Grains lifting is not the same as de-lamination, that is not a problem, the problem is the face lifting without any visible openings.
-
could you not laminate it then as the only cure

You said a repair makes the bat dead, what would be the consequences if I were to leave it and continue using it? Would the damage worsen and break completely?
-
I'm afraid so, you could have it refaced but it is cheaper for a new bat.
-
Laminate it :D

Thought i'd post in here rather than start a new thread.
Last night i had a T20 game and my bat was used to muck about before the game giving catches etc. I (and others) noticed that it didn't sound right and seemed to me making a ringing sound off the middle.
When i used it to bat with it sounded ok but 90% of contact I made with the ball was off the toe. I didn't middle a single ball I played that badly.
Upon inspection of the bat I can't find anything wrong with it visually, is this likely to be the same problem alridd had?
Thanks in advance :)

Got the exact same issue with my H4L mate, starting to worry me big time although it's probably just the way I am playing
-
Aha I take it your somewhat out of form too?
I haven't noticed it in a match as yet, just yesterday warming up.
Your H4L is new isn't it? Is it still under warranty? My laver's 3rd hand lol so I'm pretty (No Swearing Please) if it goes hence the Items Wanted topic!
-
I don't think it's going mate, its probably me not being able to hit a cows (No Swearing Please) with a shovel right now. It sounds tinny, I am not getting hold of anything. They are both new and seem to be the problem, but when anyone seems to use them, they fly!
I am not going to send them back or get rid, it's a mental thing and I am woefully out of form at the moment.
-
Press the face firmly with ur thumb? Any movement there? Sounds like delamination
-
When I smack a ball against the net, it flies. Maybe it needs more knocking in. I dont understand really because I was using them in the nets a few weeks back and was flying.
Will have a look when I get home, but when I use the mallet on both, its very responsive
-
Ah fair enough, 2 of us in that club!
100notout I think there is a tiny bit of movement but not sure :/
-
Listen mate. The bat will break at some point. Just enjoy it whilst u can. If you feel no deterioration in performance then just keep using it.
-
Ok cheers mate, do you know how long roughly delamination takes to break a bat?
-
My money is on delamination. Just the crust coming away from the core. Was it a dry bat?
-
i hit a new ball with the h4l on sunday and it felt like i snapped the bat! allthough i did hit it bottom of the sticker! lol
-
It got a little dry so I gave it another light oil a week or two back on face and edges.
-
My bat has never oiled, just had the scuff on. Should I give the back a decent coating?
-
ive never oiled a bat in my life really. just put a scuff sheet on it and left it. i hate it when they go dark lol
-
Yeah I am enjoying the clean look pal haha
Will just get on with the season and see what happens

Sounds like you're suffering the "adjusting to grass" problem that most people do after prolonged netting on artificials or well knackered nets. I reckon that you just need to get your timing back and the bat will fly!

Every bat I have ever owned that went like a train made a metallic noise and it is a very good sign that it is a cracking bat!
