Title: Effect of forgetting one piece of kit.....
Post by: tim2000s on April 24, 2011, 06:21:11 PM
Went to nets this week and didn't have my thigh guard. The result? Serious lack of confidence playing forward.

Anyone else notice the difference when lacking certain kit items?

Absolutely spot on , I have parked myself on the back foot due to forgetting my INNER thighguard.(bit soft)
Having said that after playing and missing  at 3 balls and  then getting nailed on the arm I did
hit a quick 30 odd. When you are missing one small piece of kit it definately makes you uncomfortable
playing your game.

Think its about being in the zone + switching on for the game if you haven't got all the kit don't feel comfortable + match ready

It isn't pace that causes the issues. It's seam. There are a few of us in the team that bowl some real cutters, but more to the point, it's really just about confidence. Without it I just feel less confident.

I wear a thigh guard but it really doesnt matter if I forget it. The way I see it is the only neccessary protection is a helmet and a box they protect the important parts. Pads and gloves are also good  :) but you can net or play without them, I have gone on the ball machine with no pads on with the balls being aimed at my legs and infact one of the teams in my club played someone that didnt wear gloves against some pretty reasonably paced bowlers swinging and seaming it.

I never feel confident unless I have my own batting clubs weird I know, but I forgot mine one game last season and the bat never felt the same in my hands

Feeling comfortable at the crease is not to be underrated - I marvel when i see a batsman use "club kit" and score a hundred.

So I think your question is very valid - which is why I keep all my kit together - but kit does get forgotten or "borrowed".

The next question is what do you do about it? It isn't as if we all carry spare thigh pads to matches! Plus we have the disadvantage of being kit junkies and our team mates usually want our kit rather than the other way around.

two options - 1 is to ensure all your team mates have all the best kit possible or
2 grin and bare what you have when you get out to bat and just focus on the controllables - your head and feet position - just try and hit an early 4 and get the confidence going.

the confidence issues will be in your mind, you have to be mentally strong and put it out of your mind so you can focus on scoring runs.
