Well i didn't see a topic about this so if there is then fine just delete this however id like a good debate on this one as I'm sure we all have views on this and would think like me some very passionate views. First off ODI captain A Cook whom wasn't even in the world cup team and hasn't what you would call a good record in ODI, Don't get me wrong i rate him highly as a cricketer and as a person but just doesn't make sense to me. Strauss has stepped down to concentrate on Test Matches etc so i believe thats the reason Cook is now captain.
Then i hear that 20/20 is Stuart Broad and how many people if they are honest seen that coming or would have picked him, not sure he has the experience or the knowledge or the temperament to be a captain. Again i rate him highly as a cricketer however his petulance on the field is not something i believe is fitting of the England captain. I haven't followed his career that much but I'm not sure how much experience he has as a captain in professional cricket if any which has me scratching my head.
Rate Andy Flower very very highly indeed both as a coach and as a person and when i listen to him talk i believe in him and if i was a player id run myself into the ground every single minute for him, some people have a presence and talk in a certain way which just makes you stand up and listen and believe in everything they say. Bill Clinton was another when speaking just pulls you in which some of the older forum members will know what i mean.
KP in my opinion should be captain of both however i believe we lacked the guts to give him it.

A bit odd to appiint a captain who is not even in the side. Makes you wander if this had been on radar for sometime for Cook to be ODI captain to groom for Test side in the future
-
Pretty much agree that thats possibly the thinking behind it but the other i cant work out in any way.
-
agree Rich Broad is not captian material
-
Like the idea of Broad as skipper more than I like the idea of Cook.
Agree, KP would have been a better and bolder choice.
I guess we give them a chance though, you never know!
-
Do we make too much of the captaincy as cks from sri lanka stood down after WC after he'd had a decent crack @ captaincy.
-
No the captain in cricket is by far the most important thing you can have, it matters massively in every way.
-
Thin your captain needs to warrant his place in the side so. They can have respect of players.
-
The captain doesn't always need to be the best player but agree he has to be worth his place but its the way he does the job and conducts the team that makes a captain.
-
...what about Brierley - possibly England's best ever captain, but far from a world class cricketer
-
Agree one of the best captains however think great sides don't need a great captain. Good captain yes but think great sides have lots of leaders
-
I think KP thrives when you massage his ego and giving him the captaincy of the 20/20 side might have been just what he needs to enable him to get back to his best. I have no issue with Broad, Cook or Strauss as captains, all offer one thing or another and with the amount of cricket being played having 3 different captains and, maybe, three distinctly different squads is probably a good thing and I wouldn't be surprised if other nations follow suit....think it's a missed opportunity with KP though....

I think that is a bit of a myth - sorry for being sacrilegious - but he captained the England side against the WIndies and got thrashed, then against a load of poor sides - the 1981 Aussies were hardly a vintage team. Vaughan is easily his equal as an international captain. (Strauss' record may yet surpass them both... not that he is a great captain though, more a very steady pair of hands)
Having said that I really don't like Vaughan's media incarnation and he seems to have way too much sway over the selectors (Ashley Giles in particular) as he was touting Broad for captain to get headlines in the telegraph.
I think you need a skipper who is in the best XI - which means it should have been one of Bell, KP or Broad - on that basis KP would have been the obvious choice, but clearly Flower has issues with him.

Botham captained against the Windies in series prior to 1981 and lost 1-0 at home and 2-0 away Buzz. I think Brierley did get a bit lucky in his timings and the oppo he played ie. Aus in Aus during Packer
However, the Brierley myth is based on the high regard the pro's had for him. "You're the guy with a degree in people" comment etc
-
From personal experience, fast bowlers as captains never works well.

I was referring to the WC final when we got thrashed
"Brearley also captained England to the final of the 1979 Cricket World Cup, scoring 53 in the semi-final against New Zealand [8] and 64 in the final against the West Indies.[9] However, his defensive opening partnership of 129 with Geoff Boycott in the final used up 38 of 60 allotted overs; although it was recognised that a potent pace attack of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Colin Croft and Joel Garner needed to be countered, the speed of the partnership greatly added to the pressure on the rest of the order. Garner bowled a spell of 5 wickets for 4 runs to induce a drastic collapse and hand the West Indies the match and the World Cup by 92 runs."
-
That's a bit selective Buzz!
My view was based on his test career, which is what most people will judge him on.
-
yes, and very very harsh...
-
Cook has been doing ok for Essex even got a t20 ton but is strange to appoint a captain not in the side
Broad will go one of two ways as he is a vsf volatile person which he has proven
Vaughn was a class act as captain and one of the best ever for me
Brearley was more a people person as he tended to get the best out of his players
-
I look forward to Broad's reaction to losing the toss, that is as long as his stomach holds up to the strenuous task of flipping the coin.
-
Why the hell isnt strauss still in the team? Anyone remember his 150?! In my opinion its absolute rubbish, we struggled with two captains in hussain/vaughan era, how will 3 be any better? Cook will have so much pressure on him, firstly to cement his place in the side, and secondly to do that, and captain the side at the same time.
-
I agree with cook being O.D.I captain and think he should be T20i captain because he can play t20 well and broad isn't mature enough as a cricketer to be captain!!
-
agree Rich Broad is not captian material
I like him and love his aggression

Agreed, I don't know what his captaincy is going to be like though.
-
Come on guys lets face it Cook is the best player you guys have at the moment... He deserves the Captaincy
