firstly read the other thread on opening the batting and if you still aren't sure... stay still watch the ball and don't premeditate your shots.

my thoughts on opening are.....

bat with the intention of not getting out, your job is to see off the opening bowlers and the new ball.... dw about the runs they will come by just putting away the bad ball

20/20 is a different game all together so once you feel like your in you can start to play more shots but id say your aim is to be in after 10 overs at least, nothing worse than being all out in limited over cricket

In t20 one of your top 3 have to bat through! Because even if you have 20 or 30 after 15 overs you can go on to score 60+ whereas someone who is coming in will struggle to just tee-off strsight away!

I agree that an opener's main job is to see off the openers and the new ball. I don't agree that you should bat with the intention of not getting out, because you then become too defensive and wont score any runs. My view is that you should bat with the intention of playing the balls and conditions on their merrits.

But opening in 20/20 is different. I open in 2 day and 1 day games, but in 20/20 I usually bat 5-7 as I'm not a power hitter, but I can come in and push it around while still getting boundries off the bad balls. So I'd say just play the conditions and each ball on it's merrit's and you should be right.

i meant dont worry about hitting the decent balls because you will get enough bad balls... i should have said play every ball on its merrit like you have stated.

Give it a good good hit! Look to play in the v. Don't worry about keeping it down and hit out or get out! No point in wasting 35 balls for 20 odd. Either that or look to bat the whole innings at a run a ball, and let everyone bat around you.

main thing for me in 20-20 = run a ball. good balls drop them for one, hit the gaps, run hard, run really hard, shots that would normally only be run for one, pelt two.

Keep it simple. The runs will come, just play straight :)

We play alot of T20 cricket and here's my tips:-

1. 20 overs is longer than many people think - don't panic about scoring quickly.
2. Good bowling still requires playing out, treat it like a normal game but still look for the singles.
3. Look for a boundary an over + singles against the weaker bowlers, you don't have to take many risks to post 150+ in 20 overs.
4. As others have said, play to your strengths and back yourself as 20/20 does require calculated risk taking
5. Disagree that openers have to see out the opening bowlers, bat 10 overs or the innings. You have to setup a platform of ideally 5-6 an over for the first 6-8 overs, but if your side is decent you'll have big hitters to come then up the tempo. If your 40-50 off 7/9 overs get on with it!
