We had a South African about 3 years ago, he said he played 2 divisions below the franchises back in South Africa and he was awful. After not getting picked in our third team, he left for a local team and he was quoted in saying that he had been a coach of the SA national team. He left that team and now he's at another team and looking at their stats he's done nothing!
-
We had a overseas from South Africa about 5 years ago, Roger Telemacus. He actually played for the South African 1 day side and played in the game where they chased down Australia's huge total. Hardly got any runs or wickets. Shocking.
-
Our overseas is still in Tasmania after pocketing £700 for the air fare then worked out he'd applied for a tourist visa then got nicked for drunk driving!. No pro so every team in the food chain takes a hit

Don't believe everything you read.

here u go tommy http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/may/27/worcestershire-adrian-shankar
-
tomgoose, isn't he mongoose sponsored? any insight on the reports?
-
I know Adrian personally. But it's an ongoing story, which I don't want to make comment on - there's been enough hearsay and chat already.
-
I love stories about blaggers. I think Essex should investigate some of their openers, lol. JOKE by the way
-
To play second XI cricket means he's not rubbish tho!
-
He has a first class ton doesn't he?
He sub pro'd at Preston last year - didn't score any runs then either.
Surprised Lancs let him go though - they have quite a threadbare squad this year.
-
The report made out that he's rubbish! Even though he retired hurt for 10 against Durham, he survived 60 balls against one of the best bowling attacks in the country... he must be able to hold a bat.
-
Retired Hurt - clearly playing for his average!
-
He's clearly not rubbish but I don't think many 29 years olds with an average of 19 would be getting offered 2 year county deals, obviously the media will ham up how bad he was as it makes it seem more of a story.
-
They would have seen him bat at training, so clearly they thought he could play.

Thats what I thought aswell. You don't just chuck a guy off the street in to open the batting without watching him play!
-
just been nosey and looked at this guys stats. he has been around for yonks! Played loads of minor county games with people i have played with and a shed load of county 2nd eleven games. Although, there is not many games where he has got runs, he has certainly been playing a decent standard for a long while. Must be able to play the game.
-
I think this guy is the ultimate "net" batsman - must look awesome in practice to keep getting picked.
The falsifying the passport is the worst - he has done this as the U26 players mean counties get an ECB grant - which will be the only way he got a contract
from Mike Selvey over on the County Cricket - Live! blog. "I came across Adrian Shankar a couple of years ago. I did a coaching session in the indoor school at Lord's and he was there along with Dawid Malan and BIlly Godleman. He didn't look a bad player although not exceptional. Then the winter before last, I received an email from someone saying that Shankar, having been released by Lancashire, was tearing up trees in the Lancashire League, with hundreds galore. Research showed no mention of him, but subsequently I seem to recall some registration problems ( his club already had a pro, and so he could not qualify, or something like that) as a result if which all his stats were airbrushed from the records and the club docked points. It was all very strange."
-
I've only just seen the article, absolutely brilliant. How did he get through?
As you say Buzz he must score "net centuries".
-
I think the real story here is the ECB Grant system and the lengths people will go to get a job - not surprising given the current economic climate.
Aside from his age the guy has told the odd white lie, but we all have at some point to enhance our job prospects.

but he's got a law degree from cambridge hasnt he? surely that stands him in good stead to get a well payed job?!
fair play to him for trying but he must be stupid to think he would get away with it forever
-
I agree, the odd white lie does not hurt. But when you apply for a job that your personal ability to play at a high level is looked at day in day out, then it will come back to bite you on the bum. It is not as if he has told a porky that he can use a Microsoft package or relavent managment skills is it.
If he wasnt good enough, then it is the County's fault for taking him on, not himself.
As for studying law at Uni, i am hoping this has not hindered him for law jobs as this may be fraud in some way or another
-
I think the County has a duty to its members, players and Shanker and give a propper statement out one way or another because if this is a case of him not being truthfull to his employers the details should be made clear if its not they are potentially destroying a young (albiet we dont know "How Young") players reputation by allowing rumours to escalate.
Think as Tom (mongoose) said previously it shouldnt come down to supposition and the county has a duty of care to any employee

i love walking out of the nets saying another ton not out :)

I'd be interested to here the argument as to what WCCC would stand to gain from making all of this up if it isn't true.

WCCC are yet to comment, as is Mr Shankar or his representatives.

Even Atherton was talking about it this morning

Dont think anyone said WCCC was making it up I think had you bothered to read properlly what has been said in the above thread it is that they havent actually said anything other than that they have released the player from his contract, All the "details" have come via the media which is why I said it would be nice of the county to be clear on why the players contract had been terminated.
or we can go back to making it all up ???

Bad day at the office? Jesus why so angry?
Thanks for the advice, but I have read the thread.

Then on what are the articles based? Someone somewhere has talked.

not at all Jon just getting used to the rightous indignation handed down in any thread you decide to get involved in on this forum and never angry ;)
The stories come out as like any chineese whispers via "a well placed source" and until an official statement is made from any of the parties I feel its too easy for us to believe what we are being fed by Cric info and the gaurdian etc after all it could potentially damage someones career and livlihood should in the weeks to come a story comes out saying "the real reason Shankar left was because.....
I dont have an opinion either way I just think that as ever these things are handled quite badly from a media handling point of view

I speak the truth, if you'd rather follow the borderline paranoid ramblings of the self appointed bat expert, feel free. It really is amazing how many people don't like the truth.
Back on point, if we do away with the reports so far, how much can we believe? Has he indeed been released, or is it all fiction. If he has been released, there will no doubt be a good reason.
-
He has been released. He also injured his knee against Durham and miss a significant portion of this season, if not all.

??? ??? ??? ??? I have no Idea what that was about??! more paranoid ramblings from the biggest WUM on the Forum??
And if we're going on facts then Toms given you a few there

From what I hear its a cruciate tear. You dont come back from those in a hurry!

Adrian Shankar was signed by Worcestershire CCC on the 10th May after agreeing terms.
It quickly became evident that documents provided in order to satisfy the Club’s obligations to the England and Wales Cricket Board were unacceptable.
This documentation has now been passed to West Mercia Police for investigation and no further comment will be made by the Club while the investigation is taking place.
