Title: Athletic spikes for wicketkeeping/batting
Post by: Timbo on June 27, 2011, 06:07:47 PM
Hi all,

I was thinking if anyone had ever tried using spiked track running shoes or long jump spikes for cricket.

I know there's not a lot of protection if the ball struck you but they look to me like they could work.

They're cheaper too!

I've been using running spikes for a couple of seasons now and I think they are great. I've always found that no matter which cricket shoes I wear I still find them bulky and cumbersome. Even if I wear my asics gel advance which are pretty light by comparison to other cricket shoes they still feel heavy to me.

BUT and that's a big BUT, they offer no protection if you get hit, you will be screaming blue murder. luckily I've only been hit once in nets and thank god nothing was broken. Its not a problem when fielding unless your one of those who fields with his feet, you just got to be careful when batting.

I always laugh when people say this, what compared to the massive levels of protection offered by a 1mm thick bit of shoe leather? Unless your wearing steel toe caps - not footwear is design to protect your toes from breaking etc.

I've known a few people use running spikes generally there not a good idea, they are not designed to support or help you move side ways which is an important aspect of cricket, like wise with turning.

They are light though!

I agree with Ross - they are designed for running in straight lines (or around a forgiving track). The are not designed for cricket - they wont offer your foot any support for twisting and turning and will fall apart pretty quickly as they aren't designed for twisting and turning....

Our quicks would be delighted to see someone walk out in athletic spikes... on the up side you wont need a lid as they would be having way more fun bowling at your toes!

how about:

Not if you want to turn that single into a 2 after an unlucky overthrow from the fielding side though... ;)
