Title: Problem with right heel
Post by: uknsaunders on June 29, 2011, 02:18:42 PM
Last 4 or 5 weeks I seem to picked up a recurring injury. After I play cricket or bowl I develop pain in my right heel. I have problems putting weight on it for 2 or 3 days and then it eases off, only to get worse again when I play.only thing I can remember starting it off was a long spell of bowling a few weeks back when my right calf stiffened up. Any ideas?

Sounds like a slight Achilles strain mate, i had one a few years ago. Nothin can really heal it, can have pain-killing injections. But, time is the only real healer! If you play no other sports in the winter, it would heal for next season!

Not sure it is an Achilles strain. I've had really sore Achilles for a year or so, thanks to various trainers wearing through in the heel area. Brought a pair of rubber Asics about a month again and not had a problem since on that front. I thought it might be the new boots at first, but a quick swap to my studded bowling Asics still results in the sore heal.

Ahh, have you visited your doctor? they would obviously shed some light on the matter. Is it causing you enough pain to stop you playin or is just an aggrevation? i hate being injured!

As Simmy & Liam will testify, I can do a quick sprint batting/bowl off 10 paces or so. It catches up after a while and I start to hobble as the pain increases. It's annoying and painful but not enough to stop me playing, even in a reduced capacity.

Whereabouts on the heel is the pain? That will have a big impact as to the diagnosis of what is wrong, whether from us, or from a doctor!

From what I've read though, if you are getting pain on the back of the heel, the most likely issue is with your achilles, whereas on the underside of the heel there are a number of things, including bruising, bursitis and plantar fasciitis.

Each has slightly different symptoms, so you'd need to go into more detail, and I'm sure you've already googled this!

A little update on this. I worked out some of my footwear (astro boots) were the culprit and during the winter of 2011 I recovered pretty well. The problem recurred in late 2012 and  after starting off the season ok and it has got worse in the last couple of weeks, despite some footdisc insoles. I've binned the midweek stuff/gym visits to rest it up and purchased some new boots. The plus side, if their is one, is the pain isn't as bad as it use to be but the stiffness and the inability to really put pressure on the heel doesn't help my mobility. I'm muddling through at the moment but any ideas on recovery would be appreciated.

Reckon we have 9/10 weeks left of the season so I'm going to try and manage it until then and off to the doc.

Nick just a thought but you might be worth going the docs before the end of the season as they're liable to fob you off with some painkillers and tell you to see how it goes for a few. That way when you go back after the season they're likely to take you more serious and then send you for the obligatory X-ray and possibly physio.

That's how my docs seems to work, I'm sure they fob you off because they deal with so many people overly complaining and if you come back you probably do really have something wrong with you!

I was struggling badly Saturday, particularly batting as I couldn't run or get my back foot across to cut. Funny enough bowling was less of an issue and I was stuck at slip. However, the shooting pain I got when I put real pressure on it was enough to convince me I can't just manage it and something bad was round the corner. Been to the Docs and he says 4 weeks rest, plus Physio. If I'm lucky the Physio might get me back sooner but no cricket until August  :-(

On the brightside I'm looking forward to doing some umpiring (if standing still is ok) triggering Redders (after his ton naturally) and Kenny when he visits Ashorne.

I have the same issue on my both heels , after a match or even practice I can hardly put any pressure on both heels for couple of days.
My mum has the same issue and doctors couldn't find a cure for her at all, so I thought this something come from genetics.

mini998 - sounds like yours is an ongoing condition. Mine has worsened with age and some worn down footwear.

Lou9490 - Things like wearing through the heel I now keep a close eye on but I've brought brand new boots recently so it's simply overuse.

Is the pain medially? As it could be Plantar Fasciitis if not it may just be Achilles tendinopathy. Either way go and see a sports therapist or physio and ask for ultrasound which hopefully help the healing process!!
