Title: TODAYS ODI PICTURES
Post by: Simmy on July 01, 2011, 08:09:48 PM
well took cam to headingley today. discovered a 300mm lens doesnt quite cut it for that distance so quality is poor and pics are small! need to invest in something far better.

but anyway here they are or some of the better 1's

just not strong enough to get top quality when zoomed in all way to square. if u look at 2nd pic of broads back that is propa chrisp cos it was in range to fill the full lense at full zoom.

they are ok but i am supper fussy! look at some of pics on crici info with there (No Swearing Please) 300 pound lens's bad ass!

I take it from what you say that you are using one of the 'budget' 70-300s?

The knack I've found with them is they tend to be crisp up to about 250-270mm, beyond that and the quality quickly drops off. So what I tend to do is never go more than 250mm and just crop in post editing where necessary, not ideal but better than having a soft image.

Problem is as you will know the pro level teles are very pricey. I Got to borrow a Canon 300L f2.8 a couple of years ago, stunning bit of kit but it should be for three grand.

yeah cheap sigma! its been ok doing normal stuff but you dont reliase how behind it is when compared to some of the better kit. dont go to all that many cricket games so probs not worth be upgrading. usually just shoot cars so have lens's for that and not much else

i use a Nikon D50 its 5-6 years old now so very dated! and tbh needs to be updated

u can pick them up on ebay for 200 quid ish.

all u need is a digital slr...

people try and sell u quality digital cam's on mega pixels.. my d50 is still rocking 6 megal pixels and takes far better pics than any none slr with 10+.

You can go one of two, well, three ways.

Buy a compact with a big zoom on it and you're probably looking at £200 minimum. The images will never be great on extreme zoom.

Buy a pro level slr body and range of lenses...£10k will get you started.

Buy a second hand slr and a second hand lens like the one simmy has and you could pick the pair up for around £200. By far the best option. Buy canon or Nikon cameras and Sigma or Tamron lenses. The images, like simmys will not be perfect but will herald good results.

And there is the secret. My main camera is a Nikon D1x...6mp and about 12 years old, yet still outshoots every compact camera available. Other modern slrs have come and gone, the d1x is superb.

A quick glance, and for the purposes they were taken (to remember a good day) they are fine, clear enough, they do the job.

Delve into it with a bit of a photogs eye and you see the problem with relatively inexpensive lenses that is only solved by spend a lot on pro level gear. The main clue is lines. Look at bat edges, creases in pads, definition of muscles. Do you see that everything isn't pin sharp? Everything looks what we call 'soft'.

The joys of photography on a budget.

The Canon L lenses are pretty cool. This (and the whole set of tour action photos for that matter) were taken with a 300 F4L that I hired for the tour:

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2791/4441795248_b1bd67aa99.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tim2000s/4441795248/)

If you want a go with a pro lens, Lensesforhire.co.uk do really good rates. I had the 300 F4L as it was light and I knew the light would be good, for 2 weeks for about £100. That was well worth it as far as I was concerned!

For the interested parties, taken on a Canon 40D using machine gun mode (6.8 fps), ISO 100 at F4, 1/1250. Wanted to capture action and get shallow depth of field. Had I closed it down a bit the image would probably have been slightly sharper, but at the cost of motion freeze. Worked pretty well though.

A mate of mine spotted a Canon EOS400D DSLR at Waitrose for £300 last year. Maybe they are cheaper now.

40D is a good enough camera. Sometimes a little slow on the focus. It's all about the lens though...

True, I could only trace the camera type but no idea on the lens. Rob is a pro photographer so he must have all the kit. www.rocshot.com

Serious looking funds but if it is your business looks like a bargain. Just look at the cost of weddings and 5k is nought.

Exactly, and if treated well they will last for a lifetime.

Trouble is few amateurs can justify the cost, despite how good they are.

People like me have to make do with our antiquated Leicas.
