Title: Wides and umpires
Post by: thecord on July 10, 2011, 12:53:45 PM
In the standard of cricket I play we are sometimes allocated umpires and sometimes not. I always used to think that league umpires were more strict on wides than when we umpired our own games but this seems to have changed of late. In the last couple of league umpired games I have taken several balls as keeper in front of first and even second slip which have not been wided. Because of this bowlers can keep on bowling way outside off stump forcing the batsmen in to eventually having to play wild drives at wide balls.
Has anybody else noticed this with league umpires of late, especially outside off and what are your views?

our umpire is consistent but can be quite harsh on off side wides. We played a team the other week whos umpire gave anything leg side as a wide. In the 4th team in the Kent Regional League thats a step too far in my book. One of their batsmen nearly lost his leg stump and that was called wide, at least he did the same for the other team as well

we have lines painted onto the crease for umpires to use as a guide...
I'm pretty surprised you have this issue...

We had a guy umpiring his batsmen in the 4ths from the oppo, and he started widing balls which literally grazed the stumps. Absolutely outrageous.

Seems like other people have the opposite issue if anything. Buzz, are the guidelines something your league stipulates?

wides are simple. if u dont think the batsman can reach the ball its wide end of.

By that statement, a ball an inch outside of off is wide if the batsman has backed away to leg and they can't reach it.

he forgot to add the caveat "in his normal stance"

if a batsman backs away to leg and the ball is bowled out of his reach but still within a normal area outside off stump, it's not wide.

I play in my club's thirds team and I've only ever played one game in two years with an allocated umpire (only the firsts and seconds are guaranteed an umpire). Generally when I'm umpiring I give the bowler one loose delivery per over, either down leg or outside off. If it's obviously a wide then I call them, but line-ball decisions I ususally say to them on their way back to their mark "you can have that one mate, but next time it's wide". I notice most players really appreciate that (never seems to get reciprocated though!) and I think it's just a sensible way to go about it at our level.

The one time we did play with an umpire he called me the three times down leg side. On two of them the batsman stepped across his stumps and the ball only just missed leg. On the second one I cheekily said to the umpire "that's a bit harsh, I've nearly bowled him". No malice or anger, just trying to have a joke with him. To my shock the umpire snapped back "f-ck off, you keep bowling them down there I'll keep f-cking calling them, for f-ck's sake". I didn't take kindly to being sworn at and a few verbals ensued, to which I said "you're being paid to be here and you're swearing at players? That's not very professional." He said "neither is your bowling", to which I replied "well there's a reason I play in the f-cking thirds and not for Australia... there's probably a reason you're umpiring down here too, you useless b-stard."

The moral? I prefer to play without an umpire, thanks :)

In the WEPL this year anything down the leg side is a wide and they've been pretty harsh on it

there has to be some common sense involved - what annoys me is that we have a couple of our bowlers regularly volunteer to umpire - and props to them for that, I appreciate that they are so willing - but they literally never give anything because they see the side of the guy running in in the heat.  Then the oppo umpire and, even calling it fairly, give themselves far more than we ever got...

I'm with Buzz on this one. For home games, have the lines painted on the crease and then the agreement before the match between both captains and umpires is that those are the Wide limits.

Makes it very easy.

It's been like that for years mate, at least 3 seasons I think, who do you play for?

I umpired at the weekend and the keeper took several deliveries in front of the slips but none were wides due to the ball actually swinging away even further after it had passed the stumps.

Ah right, Yeah the 1's are I'm playing 2's at the moment though and we're in Prem 2

I see, that's a very strong standard. All seconds in WEPL are pretty strong, especially when you get to prem 1/2!

In ours we have lines painted too and anything down the legside (even if the batter moves across to off) is a wide. Umpires are very consistent on it to be be fair... as long as it's the same for both sides it doesn't really matter

Yeah its pretty good, probably just slightly weaker than the 1st XI cricket I was playing in the Warwickshire Leauge

There's nothing worse than being called wide because the ball has swung away well after it has passed the bat!  >:(

I know, but you do see them given. I probably give a bit too much latitude (no pun intended) on the leg side too, in that I don't call absolutely everything!
