All my previous bats have broken before their natural "pinging" life has come to an end.
When a bat dies, how long does this process take?
Is there anything to slow down or even reverse this process?
I have seen guys playing with bats 10 yrs old or more. Are there exceptions to the rule for a bat dying after a certain number of runs???

I dont think they are built to last anymore. If I get 2 years out a bat thats all I expect. I was looking at some of my teamates bats last weekend, they are all huge & light yet they were all new bats. They will be cracked and split & replaced in a couple of seasons. The old school G&M & Newberys from years ago were tiny, but if you looked after it it would still be playable today.

Every day is a day to get a new bat mate...just ask Hosk

When to get a new bat? Whenever you like, and as part of this forum, more frequently than your bank manager will be happy with...
Seriously, older bats were less dried, more heavily pressed and therefore as a result, tended to last a lot longer. By contrast, newer bats are generally a lot lower moisture content, pressed differently and tend to have greater rebound at the cost of longevity. If you are getting a new one, you can always ask for a custom maker to press it more heavily, but the guide that is generally given is that a new bat now will last for roughly 1,000 runs equivalent use in nets and matches.

what if one bat scores 1000 at strike rate 150 and another bat scores 500 runs at 25. Does the first bat need replacing before the second?
-
Then the second bat shouldn't be anywhere near failure as it is still 500 runs short of it's estimated failure point so it's a moot question...
If bat one had scored runs at an average of 150 per match, then I'd expect it to last around 6-7 matches. If bat b scored them at 25 runs per match then I'd expect it to last 40 matches....

i am playing devils advocate a bit, but isnt balls faced more important than runs scored?
-
that 1000 runs i guess is for professional players who tend to face quicker deliveries. There are so many factors that can affect the life of a bat (how well its looked after, quality of cricket balls used, conditions its used in. style of player)the list is endless. not sure anyone should be able to give it a estimated life span.
i tend to get a new bat when one breaks or when i feel like a change ort like most people on here when i have cash burning a whole in my pocket

i want a new bat, but my bat supplier has gone missing :(

I know. The question is how many of those balls faced actually touched the bat? I'd guess the bat with the 25 average saw much less action in terms of balls touching face...
I'm just quoting numbers given generally.... we all know that a bat that's a month old and has done little can go if it gets a not particularly fast yorker in the wrong place on the toe, and equally with the correct TLC, a la Tendulkar's bat, it can last for ages...

I am using my Hattori as my main match bat, and I will keep having it refurbed by Matt for as long as I can. I will use it until it snaps on half. It seems to be getting better and better as time goes on

i must admit im liking h4l's atm

Thanks for the replies guys. When a bat eventually does go, i pressume the middle just stops pinging? or is it a gradual thing?

I would say when you felt like you have middled it, but it ends up trickling to mid off....

if you are scoring about 80runs per 100 balls, depending on how well the bat is knowcked in and the quality of balls in question, about 1500-2000 runs is reasonable for a standard G1/2 bat - including net sessions - again depending on the quality of the balls being used.
some very expensive bats will only last about 500 runs - and others may last longer (Laver talk a good game in this department).
that is my view - my SAF has scored about 1300 runs and is still doing really well, but does have a crack in the toe (sob :( )

My Laver is on 1329 runs from 64 innings.
ProCricket has just refurbed it and says it still has tons of live left in it yet
