Away at Marlow mate, looks a nice ground?

my old man is groundsman there  :D It's a cracking place to play cricket.

Normally one of the quicker, bouncier tracks around and it goes without saying a good batting deck. Not played at Marlow for 4 years now but you'll come up against ex-minor county players, a decent kiwi overseas and some other guys who have play representative level for bucks, either juniors or higher. Jamie Bovill ex-hampshire bowler was still playing a bit and Tom Hampton (England 12th man at Lords recently) was playing there until 2 years ago.

I've probably bowled there more than anyone in the last 25 years and you can extract 10 wickets if you know how, but that's inside knowledge and I'm not sharing :-)

Are you new to the Thames Valley League, who are you playing for?

Yup I just left the Uxbridge in the MCCL to play for Hayes in TVL

Hayes! - hope the ground has improved a bit. Last time I played there (1996) it was a bit of a dive. Did get 60 odd :-)

If you wanted a similar club nearby I would've gone to Harefield, or even done the 10 miles down the M40/404 and played at Marlow. That said, plenty of decent TVL clubs around the outskirts of London.

Do you bat/bowl?

Yeah its still a dive and the area has only got worse! (think mini somalia)

I'm a decent bat who can also bowl a bit of decent enough wheels.

I don't think the TVL have a registration system as such but once you play for a club in the TVL it's 4 weeks until you can transfer to another TVL club. You might actually like Hayes, but just giving you the heads up if you haven't played already.

Most decks in the TVL are pretty good batting tracks but a pig to bowl on! Most grounds are pretty nice as well - who do you have after Marlow, I'll give you the lowdown on all the other places!

A couple of lads who played at our club in Oz a couple seasons back play(ed) for Henley.

Looks like a nice ground they have too.

Great guys as well.

We have Windsor then Datchet

Windsor I think rely on an overseas quickie and the deck isn't great. It's on public ground by Windsor Castle, great view but no covers I suspect. Datchet is small and pretty easy paced, plenty of runs to be had. Datchet tend to be a good batting side.

Considered it, but maybe a change of scenery is what I need.

Teams in this league dont have covers?!?!

Most have, I don't remember the rules but I think entry into Div 1 was dependent on covers. Windsor were in Div1 a couple of years ago, so maybe they have something.

If they do not have covers Nick then it must be joke cricket unless they are allowed to play on plastic.

You'd be surprised how many clubs play a good standard without covers. As I said, it's rare in the TVL as most clubs have enclosed grounds but the only one that use to stand out was Kew, who are based on common land. Windsor are in a similar situation which is why I wondered if they had covers. Div 2a is a pretty decent level which makes it more interesting if they don't.

In the Wetherby League a number of Div 1 clubs do not have covers. Though it's supposed to be a village league the top clubs certainly do play a good standard. My club has basic covers and sightscreens, as we feel both are a requirement to play a better standard of cricket but alot of clubs in yorks don't.

Same goes for our league we paid £5000 for our covers which not every club can afford to purchase....just because they don't have covers doesn't make the standard of cricket a joke.

Some pitches aren't in a great area to have them as they will get vandalised and some grounds are too small to have anywhere to store them!

Would argue our deck is one of the best in the NE and we don't have any form of covers! Certainly better than some NEPL teams!

doesn't sound good. I am sure you are good enough Leo, if not better than that level, but I don't know of many clubs who would stick you straight into the 1s. Please tell me they've seen you net at least?

Ah, yes we played your first team thedon.  We had a fairly interesting game against your first team.  We got rolled for 78 yet nearly ended up defending it.  Your boys got over the line by 3 wickets.

ah yes, had a chat with a few of the boys about that game. We played your 2nds a few weeks before that too. They are struggling at the moment. The skip was telling me that you guys got alot of new faces in

It's a nightmare.  Lots of friends of friends playing for them and no consistency.  Things should start getting a bit better now with the schoolkids being available and the uni kids being back.  Problem is they are miles behind, and will need to go on an insane run to stay up.

In typical fashion for me I've changed my mind again, looks like ill be playing for Uxbridge having had a little discussion at selection last night. A few people had mentioned to me about how Hayes would be a downward step anyway!

Looks like our meeting is postponed leeroy!

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!! If that is his real name!!!!!!!!!!  Yeah I've played with him for most of the year, decent bowler and can smack a ball!

He got picked for the first team and didn't turn up! To add insult to injury apparently we registered him under the wrong name so we have been deducted two points.

Whats his name? Jaskaran Thandi? Jaskaran Singh?

Title: Re: Thames Valley League
Post by: thedon on July 28, 2011, 08:38:39 AM
yea its  Jaskaran Singh. Yea hes a very good powerful all rounder. When he hits them, they stay hit!  A few old barnet players joined up with uxbridge this season

Haha its still a road mate! Just not as much pace and bounce in it as there used to be.

Yeah probably better off staying at Uxbridge and trying to get into the first team there, although cant understand why I'm being overlooked at the moment.

How long ago were you at the 'bridge, maybe we know a few of the same people?
