Title: New to Custom Bats.
Post by: Thommo073 on August 01, 2011, 10:42:38 AM
Hello to everyone.

I am in the priviledged position that my club buys a bat for a players maiden century. After getting my first ton for the club last week i have started to look at bats and found this forum. I have always had off the shelf bats but since i am getting a bat bought for me (or at least a fair chunk of it) then i thought I would treat myself. However the selection is quite bewildering.

My current bat is a Newbery Thruxton Players 2lb11. I really like the profile/pickup and I'm tempted just to buy another one.

The bats i am looking at are the following;

H4L Hattori
Redback Paradox
SAF Erus
Bulldog Spirit/Growler

I would say I have 2 shots. The drive and the cut.

Opinions would be most welcome.

Regards,

Dave T

I would recommend the Redback or H4L. Could not recommend SAF after the recent events with Coleseys bat.

Welcome to the forum and well done on your maiden century. I threw away a chance for my first one yesterday!

You could get H4L or redback to make you a custom bat to the exact same shape as your newbery.

Welcome to the forum mate.

Funnily enough i got H4L to copy the bat i got my first league ton with :D

Have used it this season and it is definately the best performing bat i have had.

Here's a link to a review i did if your interested to see it: http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=9198.0

Welcome to the forum Dave. I can't say from personal experience, but I've used a Redback and a H4L bat and cannot rate them highly enough. Either way you're going to get a wonderful bat that will no doubt go like a train!

Welcome to the forum Dave, do you have a budget in mind for your special custom ?

LOL Jimba101, it was your review that put me on to H4L. I must admit i had never heard of them, but as the post title says i am new to custom bats.

Recently I have had a GN Powerbow (one of the best bats i've used) A GM 909 Hero which i really couldn't get on with. (interestingly enough a mate had a go with it and hit a ton)  Then I bought the Newbery last year.

I would say my budget would be similar to the Newbery (£180) although since the club will be donating a fair chunk of it, i might stretch myself!! (Don't tell the wife)

My friend bought a Redback Surefire. Whilst the profile doesn't suit me i can appreciate the craftmanship on it and think the paradox is more my style. To be honest the decision is down to the Redback and H4L (maybe Bulldog). Which ever I choose I am sure i won't be disappointed. Hopefully my Newbery will last for a while yet although there are some cracks appearing around the shoulder/splice area.

I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome to the forum.

Christ, getting a new bat for your maiden ton, I have to join your club ;)

Anyway, welcome to the forum mate. The general consensus is H4L or Redback. I would say no to SAF as I believe you can get better quality elsewhere, even from the main brands. If you're comfortable with your Newbery, why don't you get another one?

Colesy,

It was a surprise to me!. I only joined them last year after moving due to work. As I walked off I noticed the treaurer crying  and someone said it was because he had to buy me a new bat! :D I have hit tons at other clubs but this surprise made it the sweetest i think.

I play for Blankney CC.

Not the greatest standard by any stretch of the imagination but a lovely place to play cricket and very much a family club with a nice ground and a bar in the pavillion.

I thought it was you Dave. Congrats on the ton, bit of an end-to-end weekend your lot had wasn't it! It's BT by the way, I net at Blankney with Cam and Brummy. It is a lovely ground as well. I'd agree with what most have said, either H4L or Redback. You've seen the Redback first hand and it goes like a train, Gary makes some wonderful bats!

Have a crack with H4L mate. I have the 666 Monster and the Hattori, both of which you will find pics and review in Matt's section.

I've not used the Monster in a while, I've not needed to. Both are absolute belters. Strongly suggest you just give Matt a call and ask what he can do for you.

Welcome to the forum, and well done on your ton pal

I have had good experience from SAF,  Andy has looked after me well even requesting feedback.

My bat maybe slightly heavier than requested, but now going really well & i rate the quality of the workmanship.

I will be ordering another in the close season.

Welcome to the forum fella - congratulations on your ton!!
And nice reward for scoring the 100  8)

I did notice by the way, that there is a top of the range brand new thruxton SPS in 2'10 around the £200 Mark which could be worth a look!! Link is below:

But any of the custom bats you mentioned are quality!!! Enjoy choosing  ;)

Hello BT, yeah the Sunday side is a bit of an enigma, not a great change in personnel but they can't score a run!

I have seen the Thruxton from the link, it looks lovely.

Decisions decisions.

if your two shots are a drive and cut your like me and my redback allegiance is the best bat i've ever had, it goes like a train all over!!! awesome pick up and a lovely handle. also if you ask gary nicely i'm sure he'll put those lovely paradox stickers on for you ;).

Drive and cut are my main scoring shots and I have a Paradox which absolutely flies. They are lovely bats, well balanced and well finished with a good pick-up so I can recommend the Paradox if you are going with Redback.

I have had a H4L 666 before which I sold on as it was a tad too heavy for me and that was a massive piece of willow with a huge sweetspot and picked up very well for the size. I have just ordered a Hattori from Matt and can't wait for that to arrive - if it's anything like the 666 in terms of performance it will be a belter  :D
