Title: Cost of English Willow
Post by: tbarnfield99 on August 04, 2011, 01:51:13 PM
With a view to possibly supply bats I was just wondering how much a G1, G2 & G3 cleft actually costs to buy from a supplier.

Of course prices will differ in relation to order quantities, but just wondered if there was a ball-park figure.

As there are many bat makers on here I'm sure they will know, not 100% if they are comfortable in telling everyone though.

Cheers

G2 will work out around £5-10 cheaper than G1

Are you looking for clefts or actually made bats?

Is that all? Doesn't really justify the markup then.

I find it interesting reading on the J.S. Wright website about willow grading and how looks and higher grades don't have any higher effect on playability whatsoever. While I appreciate a good bat when I see one looks wise, I do wonder why anyone would spend £300 on a bat that will play the same as an £80 one.

Still, you pays your money…

Wow, can't be making much of a profit on those.

I was initially looking to try and supply G1ish bats for £120!

You will get hit for import Tax on the bats bought is as well....as im sure hit4six with his Mclean bats and others will vouch for its a tough market to get into with lots of people looking to supply the same customers.

You also have to deal with the return and after sales in regards to broken handles, toes etc when going down this route. The 1st time i bought a batch of bats the handles were poor and our returns were high which was why iv stuck to UK made since.

This is what worries me. The only people I have spoken to who can provide bats at a good price in the UK, are ones which are made in India anyway, so it defeats the object.

My own personal experience with bats out of the UK (I have owned BAS, AM, CA, BDM, Ihshan) were that the handles seemed to be really poor quality.

i guess the option is to either bit the bullet cost wise and get them uk made or find someone willing to rehandle every bat you order from abroad before they go to the customer

Im sure that you will be able to source a quality bat from Asia but it wont reap the margins some people think are being made!

No not at all. Not massive margins at all, especially when Import VAT comes into the equation, then stickers and any faulty goods being returned.

Is there really that bigger margins in any cricket gear though? Unless you are selling at top dollar...

Made bats, but I was just wanting to know how much a cleft actually costs.
G1 cleft - £39.45
G2 - £29.10

Inclusive of fumigation and the like.

Expect to pay £80 for a completed G1 bat and £65 for G2. Either way there aren't huge margins to be made.

presumably that cost is dependant on volume?

That's based on a volume order shipped to India. You also have to buy a mix of grades as 1/2 are in short supply
