I change my bats grips very frequently and it's always been a one hell of a task putting a new grip especially the second grip.
Was browsing the internet for easir options and came across the following:
1. Vacum grip applicator or Kwik grip applicator, and
2. The Squid - 20 second grip changing.
www.epic-sport.com (http://www.epic-sport.com)
(YouTube video - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zepRtH6JHNA (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zepRtH6JHNA))
Is there any other equipment available?
Which one do you think is better?
Can anyone review the above?
-
A decent gripping is the best option, it will not break and can fit any grip in seconds.
-
Can't speak for the Squid Grip Applicator, but have used a Kwik Grip applicator, and have to profess a preference for the good old-fashioned gripping cone. It will deal with any kind of grip, and any number of grips.
-
The Gunn & Moore vacuum applicator is very effective, but I tried using it with an Octopus grip and found that it couldn't create a vacuum.
I then resorted to the platic bag method which worked a treat.
NB I haven't tried multiple grips though.
-
what is the plastic bag method? is it similar to the way the squid works?
-
Yes it looks very similar to the squid.
Stick a plastic bag inside a grip.
Put the plastic bag upside down over the bat handle and pull down.
The grip goes nicely in place and its not particularly difficult removing the bag.
Tho' you have ruined one perfectly good shopping bag. :)
-
Cones are the best.
Vacuum applicators cannot do Octopus or thick grips.
-
Slightly off topic, but I love the bit when his says "Action" right at the beginning of the video like it is going to be some sort of epic.
-
I use the good old grip cone :)

i have tryed this and i can get the grip on to the bat, but then i have to role the grip up and down and rip the bag up into pieces to get it off. is that how your suppose to get it out?
-
Yeah.
Roll the grip up at the base of the handle and just rip out bits of the carrier bag.
Do the same with the top of the handle.
Tape the grip at the base and .......presto new grip.
Its a bit messy and destroys the bag, but I like it. 8)
-
cheers mate can this be dont with a grip already on?
-
yh but put talc powder on the both grips
-
Kwik Grips are great, especially for the diamond, chevron, suction/octopus type grips
-
good old fashioned grip cone is the best, no messing about
-
Good old cone or a pool cue or a stump or the plastic bag have been know to be used
-
Agreed'. Good, old school cone is the way to go!
-
definately cone, but if you don't have one the plastic bag is an option! dont forget the good old broomstick trick n all!
-
i have a cone and a kwick grip
use grip cone for chevrons and half grips
use kwick grip for all others as you can't use the cone for GM shock absorba or feathers, thick spirals
-
i managed to get a shock absorba on using my grip cone. I was sweating by the end of it
-
Just used the 'plastic bag technique', took me about 20 minutes to figure out the best way of getting the bag through the grip!
However once I did it took 2 minutes to get the grip on perfectly, plus it was one of those weird GM shock absorber grips.
Definitely going to use this technique again, just so much quicker (once you figure it out!!)
-
Step-by-step instructions please :)
-
I'll sell you a brand new GN gripping cone for £7.50 posted.
-
I got s Shock-Absorba grip on ok with a cone. Although I'm intrigued by this plastic bag idea
-
It will go on fine with a cone, plastic bag trick is sooooo odd, I've always had a cone so have never thought of fitting a grip without one.
-
I find it hard to get the grip on fully, I always have a lose bit at the top causing creases when I roll the grip down the cone. Any tips? ???
-
gm vaccume applicator :)
-
the GM vacuum applicator is good for one grip, but impossible to get a second one on!!
-

Just get it on the bat, roll down and then if it is short just push the roll up and down several times as it will bounce up the handle a touch, then push it all the way down and you will likely get a bit extra, do the same thing again with the main roll of grip and it will snap into place, roll up and it should be perfect.
-
Cheers Mike
-
i agree i cant put a second grip on! which is pretty useless cus i like 2 to 3 grips on my bats! if not i just use a old regualr grip cone! does the job if you ask me!

resurrecting a very old thread here but are the kwik grip applicators no more? I noticed you had one @hell4leather cricket, where did you get yours? Is it just GM that do a vacuum applicator these days? and are they the same or was there some preference for the kwik grip over the GM? I have used a cone for years but after stripping some skin from my hands trying to get a grip into the right place too vigorously I'm thinking a change is needed!
-
Tried one of the GM sucky sucky things and it was a bit rubbish.
Only worked on certain types of grip (nothing knobbly, had to form a perfect seal) and even then it was a bit hit and miss.
-
@GoldenArm - Kwik Grips are far superior to the GM ones, don;t even bother with those.
I've been after one for ages and can;t find them anywhere.
-
Rob- Kwik grip were sold by Df , might be worth giving them a ring? Not sure there made any more
-
I use either the bags method, and 2 bags for 2 grips = easy.
Or connect my vacum cleaner to my GM applicator = easy
-
I was gonna make some using a tube and vacuum pump. But then realised I'm not a trader and would get grief of admin. So didnt bother(plus I'm so so lazy)

ah thanks Matt, now I remember you saying something along those lines when I came to see you. I'll nip into the DF factory shop and have a word.
@FattusCattus yeah I'm having similar trouble, google searching is turning up only draught excluders and glue!!
-
Get me one if they have any!
-
I have a GM Vaccum Grip, worst investment ever. Something similar that stretched the grip out (without suction) would be great. Not sure how this is possible though?
-
Get me one if they have any!
I'm not holding my breath but will do mate if they have any. Can't believe these things have disappeared off the face of the earth! Definite gap in the market here for any budding entrepreneurs.
-
I must have the only GM vacuum pump that works haha.
Mine never let's me down

I mean mine works just not for many grip types, i bought it hoping it would be a great alternative when in fact its just a waste of space in my bag because i can't trust it will work for that grip... and you can't always trust a grip will not have a hole in which defeats the object
-
Get me one if they have any!
Me too! I am the go-to guy for grips at my club!!
-
Me too! I am the go-to guy for grips at my club!!
this is my problem too and I have suddenly started skinning my hands for some reason whilst doing it so I won't exactly be jumping for joy when three people ask me to re grip their bats for them at nets next week! I have found wearing rubber gloves helps but I don't exactly want to be slipping on the marigolds in the changing room, people will think I have lost it.
-
GM vacuum grip applicator is very flimsy and breaks easily. It was a waste of money. I went back to grip cone.
-
However, contrary to a few opinions on here, I found the KwikGrip much more robust, and it applied virtually all grips except octopus. Mine was an excellent piece of kit.
@Aswani Cricket - are you sure you haven't got any used ones lying around your stockroom?
-
Right guys, because of this thread, I had to go Diy on it. Made a pvc vacuum cleaner device, cost me £7 to make, and works like a charm. Will post pictures and a guide later today :-)

Very interested in this - I m in the process of building a vacuum pump driven one - just need the pump now but can't find one for less the £40.

I hadn't thought about using a vacuum cleaner - will give it a go!
-
I took a trip down to DF after a quick phone call and would you believe it:
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b444/TopSpinCricket/image_4.jpeg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/TopSpinCricket/media/image_4.jpeg.html)
I bought up the 9 they had left, I'll be keeping two for myself and sending one or two to people who have asked but I'll put the rest up for sale on here eventually for anyone who wants one.

I'll consider one of these too! How much did they cost you mate?
-

They were in a box stuffed in the storeroom and obviously forgotten about so they let me have them for the princely sum of £3.75 each if bought them all. Ha!
-
Jesus thats a bargain! I'll gladly have one off you when you get around to it. Would be nice to see how well it works with different grips first though
-
@GoldenArm I'll take one of your hands as well. If you've got one left
-
do these work better than the GM one? If so ill have one too if there are any left over :)
-
I hope they do! The GM one is pretty poor
-
Yeh the only grips that ever worked well in that for me were the thick spirals
-
I think i got a GN zone to work and maybe one octopus brand new out of a packet... Maybe?
-
Just been playing with my GM one.
High quality grips....... Still don't work. So cheap!

200% profits right there!

been getting lots of pm's about these, I've put a couple aside for people who asked first and I'm keeping two for myself; that leaves five more I will post up in the for sale section tomorrow so we can do this properly without infringing on any forum rules. Haven't had a chance to use one yet as I've run out of grips :( but will report back with how well they work when I do! High hopes as Matt @hell4leather cricket uses one so there must be something to them.

Damn. Seems I haven't got enough posts yet to see the sale section. Don't want to start spamming by any stretch of the imagination but anyone know how many posts you need before you can see it?

Good treasure find @GoldenArm! I'll buy that for a dollar! Well - more than that, obvs. :D

Firmly wrapping sellotape around each end of the grip on theGM vacuum seems to help the seal
