Title: New Redback purchase
Post by: thecord on August 09, 2011, 10:41:10 PM
Went down to Gary's workshop in Exeter and picked up what feels like a beauty of a new bat. Will post more details about it when I'm on my laptop rather than iPad as typing is a mare!

Good work - I'm popping in to see Gary when we're down on tour in that part of the world next week.

Sorry if anyone feels I teased them, has taken me a while to getting round to putting anything up about my trip to Redback and resulting purchase.
I had been weighing up my options of a new bat for a while and once I discovered that Redback's workshop was only 2 minutes away from a place that I visit regularly for work that option shot to the top of my list. I emailed Gary with the sort of bat I was interested in, Paradox shape, Premier willow, weight around 2.10, not fussed about grains just need to perform and he said he would make sure he had something for me to look at when I went.

Found the place without too much trouble and thankfully didn't encounter any tractors whilst driving up the single track lane to the workshop! As a side note don't use the address that you find on Google as it is not the one for the workshop! After a quick cup of coffee Gary produced an array of willow in all the shapes he regularly produces, whipping grips on to the handles at an impressive rate as I worked my way through them. As expected the Paradox shape was what felt best and I kept coming back to one particular stick. It was not the best looking but had a fantastic profile for the weight and picked up beautifully. Gary said it would have definitely been an LE if not for the aesthetics and I can well believe him. When he went on to say the bat was made for someone up at Glamorgan my heart sank but thankfully he said he would let me have it and make another one  :D

After a choice of stickers and a free scuff sheet fitted there and then the bat weighs a tad over 2.10 which is lighter than my current bat despite having a far bigger profile. Gary was more than happy to show me round his workshop and answer any and all questions. I checked out most of the softs and ended up getting a cracking deal on a pair of the "modern" design batting pads whilst I was there. The batting gloves also felt excellent quality but I resisted on this occasion having already spent over £200!

Sadly I have just injured myself and think my season is over so won't get chance to use it for a while. On the plus side I will have plenty of time to knock it in properly and not get tempted to use it too soon.
Service was excellent from Gary and I would definitely recommend that side of things, as for performance that will have to wait.

It's in Clyst St Mary. He did ask to let him know the day before if I was going in but if he is about and can see you it's well worth the effort.

Wonder if the Glam player was Will Bragg, he's Redback sponsored. Turns up to our games occasionally for banter.

An amazing looking bat there, grains look good considering you said you weren't bothered about looks, I love the chunky toe and minimal concaving

may put a pic up of this next to my 2.11 m&h original just to highlight the size of the redback

Sorry this took me ages to get round to but has been a very busy month for me.
Here is the pic showing the profile of the new Redback next to my old M&H.
I got the scales out and the M&H was actually up to just over 2.12 with the current grip and the Redback is actually just under 2.12. Nevertheless the profile of the Redback is huge in comparison and particularly the edges.
Knocking in has begun in earnest and I am now hated by my neighbours!

Looks HUUUUGEEEE for the weight!

I was thinking the same! I wonder what the MCC think of use voodoo and blackmagic to make a massive bat only weigh 2.10 :P

Grains are delicious!

Just thought I would update this having used the bat for the first time at indoor nets today. Only had some throw downs with old balls but performance felt really good straight away with a a couple that I actually timed (a rare thing in February!) really pinging off the middle.
Very optimistic about this bat now having read that they tend to get better and better  :)

Still early days mate as only used in a few nets so far, I will update the review once I've given it a proper go. Very happy so far though

Well I gave this it's first proper net today so thought I would do a quick update. Injuries and being scared of under preparing it and breaking it have delayed it's real debut until now but I think it was worth the wait. Felt really good and actually picked up even better than I was expecting which is good as it has a lower middle than I'm used to and it felt a touch heavy before.

Middled a few which is rare for me and seemed to go pretty well even when missing the middle slightly. Has been getting a lot of attention from team mates too, think it will not be the last Redback at the club!

Great news. My paradox got a fair bit of looking at up the club last year too. Deservably so though, they are cracking bats.

Finally managed to use this in a game now and felt really good. Think it will continue to improve too with a bit of luck, now I just need to do it justice.
It also attracted a lot of attention from people about the brand as well as the sheer size of it for the weight with dwarfing even the bigger bats on show. All round very happy.
