Title: Ian Wills SR Gloves
Post by: Nickauger on August 15, 2011, 04:19:28 PM
Don't you just love it when you come home from work and the Postman has delivered you a parcel. Well today, I received my eagerly anticipated SR gloves from Alex at Ian Wills Cricket. Based down in Cornwall, I have had dealings with Alex from our brief meetings at uni, and from personal experience, he is a genial, pleasant, friendly and knowledgeable bloke when it comes to cricket and seems to be passionate about what he is trying to achieve with his brand.

Secondly, the gloves, and in my opinion what a fantastic pair of gloves they are. Split finger design which is not to everyones taste, but being a split finger fan, I think they look the poodles's plums! Traditional colour scheme with minimal branding on the back of hand and velcro cuff fastener. Will probably need a lot of washing however, as they are very white lol, especially on the sweat band. Mostly however, they are blooming comfortable and plenty big enough for my rather large hands with plenty of ventilation on the palm, fingers and sides. They seem to be very well made, with pittards leather and good quality stitching. Really looking forward to using them on saturday.

Thirdly, the price. For a pair of gloves that are a lot better than my old kahunas, I would expect these to have cost a lot more than they did and the surprise at the quality was evident. For £40, there is no way you can go wrong. Will definitely be investing in a pair of pads, and am in conversation about a bat.

All in all, great gloves at a great price.

Are their bats handmade or imported in?

Post by: Nickauger on August 15, 2011, 09:54:12 PM
I think they are handmade in devon or cornwall, but I'm not 100%

If that is true, I'm sure both parties would be happier if information like that wasn't in the public domain lol. Especially as he wouldn't ne drawn on it when asked.

Can't call it pittards if it isn't from Yeovil and complete with tag!

I wasn't 100% sure on that myself mate, so my mistake. Imitation pittards then? It's still leather though I take it. Whatever they are, still nice gloves, which no-one has seemed to comment on yet!

Agreed, they do look like nice gloves other than the slightly wonky logo but I guess I am being picky!

Really like these gloves, not sure about the link above me and its relevance?

my point was that they could have be imported because they look near identical to me.

The palm of the 2 gloves are completely different!

But would still like to purchase them plain white gloves, for that price.

Made by the same people, most softs come from 2-3 main suppliers in India, so don't be suprised when you see this

Know any of the suppliers mate?

Not personally no

SS, SG and Robinsons.
Title: Re: Ian Wills SR Gloves
Post by: Nickauger on August 17, 2011, 02:15:45 PM
Don't they make squash? Going a bit off topic here. All/mist brands get their softs supplied by Indian suppliers. To compare the finished product to the raw material is a bit unfair to any brand trying to make their way. I'm sure most make a fairly decent mark up!

Robinsons was the one I forgot, cheers Buzz

Do you really think 3 suppliers in India make soft leather goods for the world wide market ?

No, I am pretty sure the 'Alliance' make the rest.

If you read what I wrote, I said they make a large amount, hence the similar products you see these days.
Title: Re: Ian Wills SR Gloves
Post by: Buzz on August 17, 2011, 02:53:34 PM
nope but it seems that most of the big brands go through them to get their softs made - it is reasonable to assume that they are then outsourced - but that is the limit of my knowledge in the area. I think SF must do some too.

And then there are the Pakistani brands that make kit too...

Please do let us know Jon how you have moved up the forum ranks ahead of your twin JNC86 ?

Should you not be outside rubbing buds off trees ?

Without getting into an issue , you have no idea what you are on about.

I am not even going to waste my time with you mate.

Simply stated that 3 companies supply a large number of softs around the world, Buzz said the same, why don't you have a crack at him? You won't though will you, he's an admin.

I don't claim to know anything about the business. Just what I have been told by people I respect and appreciate on this forum.

Hmm, proof I suppose that we are in a day of the week that ends in 'y'.

Well then instead of being deliberately churlish, why don't you GIVE him an idea. Actually try and be helpful.

I agree with this James - "put up or shut up" I believe would be an appropriate phrase.

Or just leave us in ignorant bliss

I was answering Johnny's question.

yes, thanks James, but Nick is also right, we have collectively strayed off topic.

Personally not a fan of the gloves on several levels. Much prefer sausage style, not a fan of the yellow & black logo, plus i've had issues with the name behind the brand (even though i understand he is no longer involved)

I have no issue with Nick as he was just following up on my reply.
