Im really struggling when i go out running, within about half a mile i start to have severe pains in my shins and i have to stop running, I don't know what it is but has anyone experienced it and got any advice on how to treat it?

i used to get them but i dont anymore not sure why

I don't sound to be rude but what height and weight are you, as this can be a factor.
Also what surfaces are you running on? You should try and run on grass for an example and see if this changes anything.
It can also depend on what type of footwear you are using. You should always use specific running trainers if possible.
Have you only just started running? If so this can be quite normal and as long as the pain starts to go away within time then you have nothing to worry about.

yeh, agree with simmy, sounds like shin splints, get an appointment with a gp, i think he'll just put you up for rest.

Im 6foot 1 and 16 stone, ive started training for army so i am pushing myself harder than normal, im gonna go to a specialist running shop and get some shoes fitted and that

I personally think that after time these pains will go. I have had the same problem but they went after I trained more. Although I'm hardly a qualified doctor so I would advise going to your GP even if it is for him to say the above!
Specialist running trainers will make a huge difference, as you can get specific shoes to suit your running style and whether you have a:
- flat foot
- high-arched foot
- 'normal' foot

hey,
I used to get Painful Shin splints as a balooned in weight, plus having flat feet used to burn my feet. I bought some insoles from boots, now that gave me relief on flat feet. I then tried Sweatshop in Manchester and they analaysed my running and recommended me running shoes. And since then not problems with flat feet and no shin splints...
Find a nearest Sweatshop as ask them to analyse the feet and then get two pairs, one for running and get the other one spiked for cricket next season

Two things to think about - in the short term, Olbas Oil will give you some relief from the pains. In the middle to longer term, make sure you run on softer surfaces. Alternaively, do what I did and invest in a decent road bike!

I do sports therapy at degree level, could be shin splints as some of the lads have suggested, although (more likely) it's just the muscles around the shin are really tight, tis quite painful!

Check out if you pronate and how much, that'll probably be it. I don't pronate at all and have a very high arch, so have to use specialist running shoes. More info here: http://www.shoeguide.co.uk/sitemap.xml/content/advice
You'll probably need Motion Control shoes like these: http://shoefits.com/New-Balance-Mens-MR1012-Nbx-Motion/M/B002NPCVN4.htm?traffic_src=GB&utm_medium=CSE&utm_source=GB&id=uk

I think of it as
Asics Gel Nimbus if you have a high arch
Asics Gel Kayano if you have a low arch
