Hi all,
Apologies if I'm covering old ground, I'd normally search old threads to canvass opinion but as that's not available here goes...
I'm considering a new Millichamp and Hall, they're a brand I've coveted for years (since Mark Lathwell days, so that shows my age!) but never got round to using. A lot of their bats seem to have quite low middles which won't suit my game, so I'm seriously considering a G1 M&H Original as a decent value option. Does anyone have any experience in using one of these?
Thanks in advance....

Aside from the point that they don't sell these as G1s now, rather G2s, unless you go for a custom?
-
I read it that they do both G1 and G2?

I believe that if you go on the M&H Shop website, all they offer is a G2.
-
Thanks Tim, I stand corrected!
Irrespective of the grade of willow, has anyone used an Original in the last couple of years to enable them to offer an informed opinion on performance?
-
M and H make lovely bats - but if you are really concerned about performance, you only real solution would be to go down to Zummerzet and choose one (which will be fun!).
The M and H bats I have seen all look lovely, so if you do get one, I am sure it will be great. What I would do though, is phone them up and talk to them rather than order one straight through the website, so if you can't go and see them, you get one picked out for you...

Thanks Buzz. A trip to Somerset isn't really an option as I live up north, so a call to M&H may be the way forward. I guess the upside of a phone call rather than a visit is that I can't be tempted into buying an Amplus instead....

there is one left of the m and h original in medium weight left on the pro direct cricket website if you dont mind an internet buy
at 116.00 it's the best value around
as for performance that's more down to the person holding it

How about an Amplus, fabulous meaty bat with a mid middle. A bit dearer than the original but it will put a smile on your face. Ive seen 3 and I thought they were superb.
-
The pressing quality of the M&H tends to be very good so performance should be decent.
The Custom M&H I have is superb!! Had a couple of Harlequins previously which were superb bats too.
-
PPccopener, thanks for that. I'll speak to them. I take your point on the performance, but we all want the best bat to help allow for our lack of talent! Or is that just me....
D7bow - yeah the Amplus does look interesting. I was hoping not to get tempted up the range!!!!
Pete - thanks for the feedback. Certainly nobody is saying anything to scare me away from M&H.

Yes,true we all fall into the same trap. 250 quid bat makes you play better, it does'nt.
I suppose the thing to remember is the best bats are not neccesarily what you see on TV or also the most 'popular'.
M and H iv'e had(i use Salix now) and found them top class. For the 116.00 on pro direct it wont be a top grade bat,it depends what you want for your money.
I personally use Salix bats because they are balanced better than others I have used, they also dont tend to have massive profiles-huge bats throw out the balance.
M and H bats tend to be slim profiles and great balance, customer service is good too.
Of course you have to be happy with it otherwise it will play on your mind.Ive lost count of the amount of bats i've disguarded as 'not great' when really some hard practice in the nets would have been better.
we live and learn thou...

So I guess what we're all saying is that M&H bats are generally very nice and do what most of us want. The question I guess I'd ask is whether you'd consider getting yourself something from one of the smaller makers.
H4L, Redback, SAF, Instinct and Bulldog all make bats that are (in my opinion) better than the M&H normal range at about the same price, and you can easily get the kind of profile you desire from them.

Hi Tim,
Your question has some merit. I've had some great bats over the years, including from a range of small manufacturers, and the reason I'm looking at M&H is that i sort of feel I've missed out by not having owned one! I kept meaning to get 0oone but never got round to it.... The fact that M&H have a sale on has probably brought this interest up to the surface...
Redback do have some appeal, as do H4L. I guess I could spend the off season thinking about it, but like the child I am I want a new bat now!

I spoke to Pro-direct about 6 weeks back about the same bat as it seemed a good deal. I asked them if they could be more specific about the weight as the medium is 2.10-2.12 I think and I wanted a 2.10. I got an email reply to say they didn't actually have the bat in stock and it was a 'order by demand' item so they couldn't give me a weight nor could I specify a specific weight when ordering.
They were going to order one and let me know what the weight was but I never heard anything back

I did the same, got in touch to see what weights they had and whether i could get a specific one (2'12) and the guy on the phone sounded like i'd just ordered a pizza from him. Didn't have a clue.

I apologise for bringing up an old topic but are these M & H Original high concaved or fairly traditional ?. I have never seen them in flesh . Many Thanks .

Hi, I have a M&H which I had made to order last year. Its a G2 but the quality of willow is quite good with about 8-9 straight grains. First the finish - its not as slick as you might find a GN, Slazenger or GM bat in that the sanding and surface finish isn't immaculate. But then you can clearly see its hand made and hence the finish isn't machine like. Secondly the shape - the bat is quite traditional and the middle is quite high. Its not much bowed on the face and the spine is not concave at all. The face is slightly curved and the edges are quite traditional and not as thick as you might find with a GN or other modern bats. The bottom of the handle is slightly oval shaped but not too much. Thirdly, the pick up - the bat doesn't pick up the lightest despite its having exactly the same shape as the Harlequin. In fact the Harlequin and the Original are the same bats except the Harlequin is a grade 1 and not a grade 2 willow. My Original was spec'd as a 2.8 but it picks up more like a 2.9 -2.10. But it is well balanced overall. Last but not least, the performance - the ping off the middle is unbelievable and this alone is what makes this bat worth buying. I knocked mine in for just under 2 hours and took into the nets. The sound and feel off the middle is staggeringly good. Having such a high middle does mean that back foot shots hit off the bottom of the bat does feel dead but then thats normal of any bat. The bat is ideal for playing on the front foot and hitting the ball on the rise or for those who like to play cross bat shots. All in all I would recommend it but please make sure you want a bat with a high middle! Last thing I would mention is the grip and toe guard quality. My toe guard fell off within facing 4-5 balls and I think the glue used to apply it was just cheap and weak. The grip itself is pretty thin and not of good quality. But then again I think you are buying for the ping and the special pressing they give the bat which I understand is what makes the bat perform so well.

That just sounds silly. If they didn't have any and order them by demand, surely they could say 'can you please send us one that weighs 2lb 10oz's (or whatever weight you are after)'. There is no logic to order by demand, but then don't order what the person is after.
