Title: Bat weight?
Post by: roco on October 08, 2011, 08:06:28 AM
When you consider a bat and you think about your weight do you take grip set up into account?

As the bat I have just recieved I have put 2 spirals and a half grip on the back of the handle so prob 4 1/2 oz extra weight rather than the 1 oz for a chevron so a 2lb11 is now 2lb14 1/2 but does this matter as the extra weight is added to the handle so could act as a sort of counter balance

Just wondering as some people weigh the bat bare ie no grip some with grip

Thoughts

I always look for weight with grip but then I don't have a fancy grip set up like some

I always go on feel! I would never expect a bat maker to base their bats on stickers, toe guard and 2-3 grips. Therefore I assume (sometimes incorrectly) that a bat standard weight should have 1 single grip on.
If you add 2 or 3 grips then although that increases the overall weight, that weight is in a specific area - so in this case counteracting the negative of a heavier bat with the positive of an even lighter pickup, if that makes sense.

I weigh it with grip, I bought my Ayrtek at 2lbs 8oz with a chevron. With a scuff and no grip it's 2lbs 8.5oz, with 1 and a half chevrons it is 2lbs 11oz!

Bought my bat at 2.10 with one grip, I have added a scuff sheet, some tape and a double thickness grip over the top. Not sure what it is now.

Go on feel my friend. . . . dont over complicate it.

i like a thick oval bottom hand. . . .some of my bats weigh 2.13/14 by the time i have added two and a half grips on.

generally though my bats are about 2 8/9 without grips

i usually consider my grip set up when deciding weight, my grip set up is usually only a single grip so it doesnt make that much difference, 1 oz more at most if i want a thicker grip..

It's tricky but we provide the weights of a bat with a single chevron so that people can work out the overall weight with their grips set up then!

All grips are a diff weight with chevron being the lightest....a spiral can had 2oz for instance
