Forgive me for indulging in the American penchant for way too much bio and talk. My son's boarding school in Pennsylvania has a cricket club, and I got him this bat, a Templar from Choice Willow. He is an Anglophile and had spotted the bat himself last year. Of course, I said it was too expensive, but I did get him a set of gloves from Choice with the Cross of St George on them. Shortly after he started in at school his grandfather died. He was very close to him, and cricket was a shared interest. He has kept his grades up, worked hard, AND Choice had quite a "fall sale" on this year so I thought I would get him the bat.

His grandfathers team in Guyana. (left end of middle row)
There was one problem with the bat---I absolutely love it. Now I may have to get one for Dad. I will not bore you with the technical reasons for why it is the best bat I've swung. His is LIGHT 2 lbs 6 oz, so Dad's will need 2 more oz.

Firstly this is a forum where there is no such thing as too much bio and talk - if anything you haven't put in enough here...
secondly - now you are on the forum your joys of a custom bat will exceed those of your hand made fly fishing rods on no time at all.
I can understand why you like that bat so much!!

Storys like this put a smile on my face :)

Quality blade and 2'6 is a credit too the bat maker as it looks easily 2'10.Great story and the old picture of your grandfarthers team just topped it off nicely.Welcome too the forum ; )

Thank you for the kind and welcoming words, on this thread and elsewhere. I actually popped in to the post office and the bat did weigh in at 2 lbs 6 oz and 3/10ths.

Wonderful story, great looking bat...please stick around!
To be honest I get excited when a new member knows what a full stop is these days.

Not wishing to ruin everybody's illusions of what is clearly a beautiful bat, but is it a harrow, as it is for your son? Just wondered if that might explain the low weight, big profile. It is a great story though.

The bat looks great, nice stickers too, I hope he appreciates it and gets many runs, my lads bat mad and cant wait to get in the districts u9 winter nets
nice story too

Nope it isn't a harrow. He is almost 16 and I thought a full sized short handle would be best in this level of quality---so he could use it for a while. If you go to Choice's website and go to the Templar bat you will see that 2 lbs 6 oz is the lowest possible weight for a short handle adult bat. Their other bats have a starting weight of roughly 2 lbs 8. I think this might be a function of this being more of a top order, singles, shot makers bat. So, they can probably go to town on the concavity and not have the gigantic edges, etc.. . I add a picture of the bat next to other ones to show that it isn't a harrow. It IS very, very thin at the shoulders and top.

Welcome to the forum mate. What school does your son attend?
-
Visigoth do you mind if I ask you how did you get into cricket and loved the game of cricket being an American?

@ Cover drive. First, let me repeat I play recreational cricket for fun---the village "last XI". I grew up playing baseball so sometimes good things happen, but often bad things happen. I do bowl too, offspin. I did a Master's degree at Cambridge (started 87 finished 89) and played for fun (MCR last XI) there and just really loved it. Marrying a West Indian with lots of relatives helped me keep up with it.
I think this is one of the great things about cricket, it is a game, like golf, that people can enjoy at many different levels of skill. This is not possible in baseball since endless fielding errors would turn a game into a joke. Hence, softball has become the recreational sport.
Latest post: In case anyone is wondering, I edited and deleted a bunch of stuff. Stuff like a picture of myself, my son, and some info. I'm fine with my initial sharing, but those who were interested have seen it and I prefer not to leave personal stuff just floating out there in cyberspace.

i had friends at mercersburg. I was also at a school not to far away, but we had a proper cricket league with a number of schools participating. hopefully the game gets a lot more traction within the American school system
