A video link posted by langer17 on other forum so I thought I'd share here so while I was watching the video near the end (at 26:00 mark) in the background I see a bat with yellow grip and it is like Newbery TT.
So question is Julian was the first one to experiment that before Newbery stole his idea?

Since Julian done his apprenticeship under John Newbery do you think there is a chance Julian "borrowed" the original idea?
-
You think John Newbery did it all the way back?
-
Maybe
-
I'm sure podshavers have been experimenting for many many years
-
TT is like a modern day newbery Excalibur isn't? They're a good 30 years old
-
Exactly Johnny... late 70's early 80's...Just when Julian was doing his apprenticeship

Mind posting Excaliburs picture?

There was also the slazenger wg from the same period with a very similar shape.

Wish those were the prices today!

Still believe the Excalibur was first.. '78-'79 I think
-
I have seen a slazenger shoulder less bat. A good few years ago.

John Newbery invented the GN Scoop and the Excalibur, Millichamp was his apprentice.
John left Gray Nics in the early 80's, to set up Newbery. I believe Tim Keeley may have also worked at some point for Nics.
-
But Cairns used the Excalibur in '79 playing for Otago scoring 110 batting at no.9 Tom
-
He used a Crown to score that 100.
-
Ok... Was just reading off Cricinfo on that one
-
Well apart from the bats from the 1700's I still believe the Excalibur was the first shoulderless bat...lol

So John learned his batmaking from Gray Nicolls?
Does it mean Andrew Kember also started off Gray Nicolls?
-
Yes. Len Newbery (John Newbery's father) was one of the original bat makers at Nicolls, prior to when it became Gray Nicolls.
I believe Kember was just at Newbery. But may be wrong.
