Title: Bit disappointed that GM would crack this quickly
Post by: uknsaunders on November 09, 2011, 10:53:55 PM
I have a new GM Icon 707, which comes pre-knocked in. I did an additional 15-20 mins knocking in and used it in nets last week. Same lads, same assortment of used balls this week and look what happened:-

It's two cracks going across two grains, not unusual but still annoying. However there is a crack going down the grains and dented into the bat. None of the lads were quick or using new balls in my net. I might be expecting a bit much but it's a fairly hefty dent/crack for a bat that's knocked in. It's not the end of the world but I'm a little annoyed that I'm going to have to repair the face to stop it getting worse after 2 net sessions  :(

Nope, I wanted to see what others thought first. I will contact them if I'm not perceived to be over reacting.

Apart from Simmy's Pink balls, which I didn't face, all the balls used were out of the used ball bag, ie. the same balls we used last week. Sure some of them may have some lacquer still on them but all of them have seen a fair bit of use.

Thats kind of my point, my bat had already had some extra knocking in and 1 net session prior to yesterday. You took yours out of the packet and started smacking brand new pink balls around, yet it hasn't cracked or left a great big dent in the face.

Bit aggreived, got it from JJB so I'm not sure whether to complain to them or GM directly.

Normally you'd complain to the retailer and they should take it up with the provider.

Every bat is different and requires a different amount of time knocking it in. I can see quite a few seam marks on the face of the bat which tends to show that it needs additional time spent knocking it in.

your contract is actually with the manufacture and not JJB. although they would generally be your first point of call.

personally i'd contact Edward directly...see what they can do.

Same comment as the guy above, seems to be you haven't finished knocking in the bat properly! But surface cracks can happen, not really a big deal, but I understand where your coming from!

Most are seam impressions on the facing rather than the wood. I did run my fingers over a couple to check yesterday.

I think it brings a new definition to "Ready to Play" if I need to spend more than the 30 minutes I've already done knocking it in followed with the first net using an old ball. Might as well say it needs knocking in properly lol. I've contacted JJB in the first instance to see what the returns procedure is and whether they are happy to replace the item.

If every time somebody had a problem with a GM, they contacted Edward, I'm sure he'd go mad!

"Satisfactory quality is defined as what a ‘reasonable person’ would regard as acceptable, and takes into account factors such as price paid, fitness for purpose specified, appearance and finish, freedom from minor blemishes, safety and durability. If it becomes apparent that an item is not of the quality you were led to expect, you were not aware of any such defect when you bought it, and you bought from a seller acting ‘in the course of a business’ (i.e. not an informal sale), you are quite within your rights to go back to the retailer, even after some months of use. If a product develops a fault within the first 6 months, the assumption will be that this defect was present at the time of purchase and you will not have to prove anything. If you are returning an item after this 6 month time period, this automatic assumption does not apply, and it may be up to you to prove the fault did not occur through misuse. You should also consider aspect of durability and acceptance." - From the What Consumer site.

Also, your contract for a product is actually with the supplier of the product, not with the manufacturer, which is why your first point of call when something breaks should be the supplier rather than the manufacturer, as they are the ones that must make good.

According to laver, you should still get seam marks on a fully knocked in bat, and JJB is your point of call

Crack wont affect performance, just carry on using it

no it wont, but it might effect the life of the bat, if left as it is. Should I be responsible for the repair? Should this be expected from a supposed knocked in bat and am I within my rights to complain.

I'm always weary about 'ready to play bats'. I'm pretty sure GM still advise you to knock in the bat properly when you get it even though it's stated as GM NOW etc... They pride themselves on their knocking in service (according to their bat making video with swanny in)(?)

At the end of the day every bat is different and I would be very annoyed if this happened with a 'ready to play' bat, as it would seem as it's wrongly advertised.

bat returned and refund given. They tried to find another but no luck, real shame as I was getting to really like it but the damage look even worse in the sunlight, so either I had to repair it or it went back.
