Title: Bat Moisture content: An interesting experiment
Post by: kaustav on November 10, 2011, 07:20:02 PM
Alright folks: Jason and me have been having some conversations about the moisture content of the willow in some bats. So he bought a moisture meter and the results were quite interesting, specially with the GM bats. Please feel free to share your thoughts. Special thanks goes out to Jason for taking the pains to do this.

Here are the results (and you can see the picture below):

In Jason's words:
1. mattrixx zouk pro scored a low average ( 10 tests) of just 2 %

2. Vindico scored a solid average of 9% in every one of the 10 tests

3. GM luna original has zero moisture content, with poly coat on ( 2011 bat )

4. GM flare original has zero moisture content even without the poly coat ( 2011 bat as well )

Jason's words:

The mattrixx is really dry.

the vindico marauder is solid and within normal moisture area. i think 8-12 is normal. Andy from Laver told me 12 % in the cleft when manufacture starts.

Its strange why the GM bats, from two different suppliers, two different models, one with poly coat on and one with it recently removed is showing zero moisture content. i did each bat 10 times and got an average reading.

i wonder if GM are doing something to their bats to either

A : dry them out completely
B : have them dipped in some chemical to lock moisture in and keep any moisture out and also blocking the measuring instrument.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and inputs. Unfortunately the pictures (all small sizes) just won't load :(

When you say poly coat do you mean antiscuff?

One would assume so. You'd be hard pressed to find a GM Original with a cloth covering.

Does this mean GM bats have no moisture in them? Can someone please explain what all this means. I though that a bat should have between 8% and 12% moisture. If its 0% then surely its dryer than a very dry thing

I don't think the moisture content is 0 in GM bats to be honest; must be some kind of chemical they are using which is leading to this observation. Now the reading was with pinless meter as the ones with the pins would keep making 4-5mm holes. I hope that someday somehow I can upload those pictures!!

Thanks Rob for putting those up for me.

if thats where your measuring it then any bat with an antiscuff will obviously give a reading of 0. Also if the other ones has just had the antiscuff pulled up then it's probably still got too much glue on it to give a proper reading.
