Title: Bat Profile
Post by: thedon on November 25, 2011, 11:57:57 AM
I was hoping I could get some advice on this matter. Which profile should I go for, big edges, with a smaller amount of wood in the middle, or meaty middle with smaller edges. Which would be more forgiving?

I'm more of a classical batsman, but on occasion do like going over the top.

I would say meaty middle small edges :)

Redback Surefire profile! Lovely traditional profile with a fairly low middle (someone will correct me if I'm wrong), for going big on your drives!

depends on your batting style. Good players require smaller edges, because they middle it more regularly than some of us hackers. If you don't consider yourself a good timer of the ball, big edges might help. Likewise if you are a strong cutting/puller than a higher middle might be better. If you drive and hit over the top alot then perhaps a normal to low middle, depending on the bounce of the tracks you play on.

I'd ask to borrow a few bats during nets and see what style of bat and profile works best for you.

I'd say Redback Paradox would be a perfect mix of both worlds.

I read norbs post on Inisght and he said that a thick edge bat will have same amount of wood/meat as a thin edge bat (obviously considering same weight), it is just that the wood will be used differently (thick edges vs thin edges).

The sweetspot on thick edges will be limited due to its size and will be wider as opposed to thin edge bat which will have a longer middle

Hope this make sense

Hmm  - that's not strictly what was said at all. You said that the thin edge bat will have a longer middle. The middle length is dependent on the length of the spine, and not the edges.

What Norbs said in relation to this argument was that most batmakers making a low middled bat will put the highest point of the spine level with the thickest edges giving it a poor pick-up, rather than using Offset edges.

He also said this:

I think we've all got confused here... What I was trying to say is that the difference between a large and traditional edge is minimal.  They both still have similar amounts of willow in them in the hitting area.  It just that there is an obsession with large edges...

I think a bat similar in shape to the hell 4 leather that Mad Bobbin is selling would do a job for you...
