This is sheer cowardice a cheap act on part of the terrorists/extremists.
This is what happens when a country is run by spineless administrators who are just puppets to a military regiem.
This instance will hurt sports and the much need revenues required to promote sports in Pakistan. I do not foresee any international side travelling to Pak for any sporting event in the near future.
Pak can easily kiss their World Cup matches good bye.

btw, was the Pak government not obliged to provide a bullet proof bus to the SL players?
Even the security vehicles were not bullet proof. I feel sorry for the Pak security personnel.
Millions are spent protecting the like of Zardari, Ghilani etc etc but not the security agencies. Shocking.
So much for the word given by the Pak govt on security.
Guys come with guns fire them launch grenades and just vanish without a clue???

yes the series has been called off. The SL team will be flying out of Pak on the next available commercial flight.

Did someone forget to mention the umpires were also attacked and one is critical. Heck they are only umpires.

I found some information it was Ahsan Raza (the former Pak international who turned Intl umpire a year back) was the one critically injured.

An English match referee on his way to officiate at Pakistan's test match with Sri Lanka was praised for his bravery today after diving on top of a local umpire to save his life during this morning's gun attack.
Chris Broad was seen walking around in a blood-stained shirt in the minutes after the ordeal, which saw a dozen heavily-armed militants attacking the Sri Lankan team bus, injuring nine team members and officials and killing at least six people.
Broad, the father of England fast-bowler Stuart, was one of several match officials and umpires travelling in a minibus directly behind the Sri Lankan vehicle when it was attacked.
According to an account given by Nadeem Ghouri, the Pakistani test umpire also travelling in the minibus, the Englishman dived on top of Ehsan Raza, the fourth umpire, in an attempt to protect him after he was critically wounded. Mr Raza, who was shot in the back, was said to be in a critical condition in hospital today.
The Sri Lankan team were attacked as they made their way from their team hotel to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore to play in the second day of their five-day test against Pakistan.
“It was horrifying. There were bullets flying around us and we didn’t know what was happening,” Mr Ghouri told the Reuters news agency.
“When the firing started we all went down on the floor of the coach. Our driver was killed instantly from a shot from the front.”
He added that, after Mr Raza was wounded, Broad – a former England opener in his playing days – lay on top of him to protect him. “It was very brave,” he added.
Following the shooting of the driver, a local policeman was then asked to drive the minibus to the stadium.
Broad's bravery was also praised by Dominic Cork, the former England cricketer, who said he told him he had suffered "the most frightening experience of his life".
The Foreign Office later confirmed that the Sri Lankan team’s British assistant coach, Paul Farbrace, was among seven injured in the attack, which threatens to leave Pakistan isolated in the world of international cricket.
Cork became the first to call for a boycott Pakistan amid growing security concerns. The Sri Lankan team had only agreed to play the series as replacements for India, who pulled out amid deteriorating diplomatic relations following the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

going by the news being reported on various news channels and the internet, it seems the attack was planned just to terrorize rather than to kill the players.
How did the terrorists know that the SL players were in the second bus and not the first bus which the Pak cricketers took that day??
Why were the cricketers and umpires not given bullet proof buses and the police armoured vehicles??
Hopefully we will see some concrete action from the Pak govt rather than the blame game. Again the big question is does the Pak govt/administration have the will power and guts to confront and take out the terrorist organization behind this??

I feel sorry for the Pakistan players but they can't honestly expect teams to tour there now. This just goes to prove that nobody is safe.
The Sri Lankans were supposed to have head of state security, If that was there head of state 5 or 6 cops, I wonder what there lowest level of security's like.

From what it sounds like, Chris Broad's comments are more out of anger than rational thought. 15 police officers were killed or severely injured... That means there was significant protection. And the fact no players died probably reflects their bravery

i agree with chris broad specially what they showed in the news showed that there was no where near enough protection plus there was 6/7 police. In the news at ten today they said that they found bits of bullets and things which the police didnt see (this is evidence ) if they cared and wernt so carless they would have seen it plus they sowed cctv of some of the gunmen after in a maket close by just walking away with guns not even running
and another thing which is sad is this will most prob not only ruein cricket in pakistan but also india and sri lanka too

The concern is that perhaps this attack was purely a demonstartion of civel unrest against the government and there was no real intent to harm the cricketers. I know that sounds odd but after looking at the footage a number of time I can't help but fail to understand how the cricketers and umpires weren't slaughtered. That many gunmen and that many bullets and no cricketers killed?
Interesting.
