Who is the most famous current un sponsored player in international or domestic cricket? (please dont say micheal clarke :)
Thought this might be an interesting topic.

..can anyone think of anyone other than Michael Clarke?
-
wat johnny said lol

To my mind there are two different sorts of sponsored player, the ones who are physically paid to use a brands equipment and those that are given free gear but no retainer. I would imagine that every brand in existence would love a player to come to them and say, I play for Hants, Surrey, Glam etc can I have free gear....I can't imagine any player with a pro contract is struggling for a gear sponsor...! The only guys you ever see with blank bats are the ones waiting for the big money to be offered!

True, but i thought there might be one lone warrior out there...
-
Thought players had an allowance i.e they can have upto £3000's worth of kit...
Tomgoose is the guy to talk to!
-
Dilhara Fernando isn't sponsored i think.
-
Good shout! SF Gloves, GN Pads, not sure about bat make.......as a test player he's got to be holding out for a retainer hasn't he?

Would guess Newbery by the hammer edge sticker.
And i doubt anyone wants him haha the way he bats.
Could do with a new lid though Tomtek should get on to him.
-
This could be a good topic. Has Owais Shah signed with anyone ? Wasnt he using blanks recently ?
-
SS i think.
-
I'm going with Prassana Jayawardene's old GM, Angelo Mathews' GN pads and arm guard and someone who uses SF's gloves.
-
He was using SS tonight

I'm not seeing the gm side of that bat! and i think the SF gloves are his old ones.
-
Just me who can see a faint outline of GM labels on the bat?
-
Could be a newbery outline actually........ ???

The bat is a Newbery.... You can see where the stickers were

I can see the tails but i thought that was Newb especially with the hammeredge sheet.
-
Got what was the standard white spiral grip on Newberys. I stand corrected.

Exactly this.
Michael Clarke isn't struggling for a sponsor, he's just struggling to find a sponsor to pay what he wants. A blank bat makes him an advert saying "I'm available to sponsor"

Whilst also saying to Slaz; heres what you could have won!
It's like winning a speed boat on Bullseye and living no where near a river or the sea.
How were you ever supposed to split a boat 50/50 ???
-
I'd argue that even at County level it's getting harder and harder for players to get free gear.
From my own personal knowledge of Glamorgan, the top players will be sorted out by their respective sponsors but many of the squad will not even have this luxury. For the young lads playing in the 2nds it's almost impossible to get free gear, even if they're on pro contracts.
Compare this against football where Nike and Adidas drive round the training grounds giving out free boots!

To be fair, the speedboat always came out on a trailer... ;)
Who'd want to sponsor Dilhara?
-
Younis Khan went a few years with no sponsors, also Steve Waugh think there was a reason for Mr Waugh doing it. Surely anyone in the public eye is worth a bit, Woodworm/Aero seem to sponsor purely tailenders now lol

Reminds me of peter kay! love it!

Quite a number of 'tail-enders' can bat these days!
So you'd think that brands would be more eager to get additional coverage?

As well surely bowlers would miss out on these mega bucks deals, they don't get huge sums to wear boots!! Or do they?

cost of a pair of footy boots is alot less than giving out a bat though! let alone gloves/pads/bag etc
-
I don't know Tom. Some boots will give some bats a run for their money.

i best the cost price that Nike pay to make them is still alot less than a bat though.....the mould costs for the sole on the other hand wouldnt be cheap!!
-
Just saw they're £280 in Sports Direct!!
-
Michael Clarke wasnt unsponsored, he left slazenger and went to spartan, was just waiting for stickers to come trough i assume he is listed on the spartan cricket website as a player
