A nice little write up in the financial times ...http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/284004bc-3721-11e1-96bf-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1ifOeykRw

I'm more of a sun reader myself! :D

great write up. was an enjoyable read. couple questions from that though:

1) do you use a knocking in machine to knock in bats?
2) my understanding was that linseed oil is still required, scruff sheets just offer protection afterwards?

linseed oil is used to lock the moister in of the bats i think

and to make the wood fibres nit 2gether...

i think with ascuff sheet its not needed as much as it protects the wood.

ive never oiled a bat yet

Scuff sheet not only protects the wood but also help moisture to stay in the wood (it prevents from drying out).

As Simmy said linseed oil prevent bats from further dryness, it does not increase willow moisture content.

Thanks Buzz, got in here by accident earlier today and saw this page and topic, and was chuffed by all the lovely response to the article. So joined up and got Tom (Ayrtek) to approve my reg, which he did straightaway..other wise I wasn't going to pay him for the Elite lid which he is designing for me :D
