Title: Winter Nets
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on January 07, 2012, 02:38:47 PM
When do most peoples winter nets kick off? ours as set to start 1st week of Feb at the indoor nets at Glos C.C

wondered if people have been netting since the end of the season to "keep their eye in" or do people enjoy the down time until dusting off their kit for winter nets again....we have an indoor cricket league as well so guess it hasnt really stopped for me due to this buth avent actually been into a net as such.

To be honest we never stop .
Myself and a few lads from the club book the nets at our local sport centre every Sunday 2-6 and just bat on .

My Winter nets started last week, but that was the only week I can go as I am busy on Tuesday nights from now on :(

I've been netting during the off-season to keep my eye in, found I was a lot less rusty than most going in on Tuesday, though I did get the quickest bowlers at me to help me shake off the Christmas Cobwebs.. :)

Don't know when ours start, normally second week of Feb..

How many of you actually Finnish with a indoor game any of you ? I'm not that keen on it but I suppose it's more practice , nothing like taking out some of the indoor lights !!!

netted for 5 weeks in November to keep things ticking over. Nets kickoff again next Weds until the end of March. Last year we did a friday session after work and some of the guys loved it.Planning a 2 hour hotspot impact sheet session and possibly a couple more one off sessions.

Hard to say but I do feel because we net more than most teams it does help our performances during the season. Little things like the positive manner of our batting in terms of boundaries and the way the guys seem to score more freely at the start of their innings. Our net sessions tend to be tougher than the games we play and I'm sure that helps.

Ours start last Sunday in January. Some of the lads have been playing in the Ayrtek indoor league but I find that pesky roof gets in the way personally

Just play indoor to keep eye in and then will start around March.  Sometimes it does more harm than good. Nets have it coming on to you quick and even bounce..................outdoor in April Pudding!!!!

I haven't stopped!
Had a poor season with the bat, didn't net as much during the season that I normally would do.
Doing everything I can to be a better bat.
Indoor league has treated me well 3x retirements (ret. @ 25)
Bowling not so good!

Been netting with a mate and start some coaching on Thursday.

Post by: uknsaunders on January 11, 2012, 10:29:03 AM
we all look bad at Headingley netting. Lightening fast surface with bounce makes it look like Perth rather than Yorkshire. Some of the net sessions are pretty lively when a couple of decent bowlers rock up. It's not a batsmans game, more like a shooting gallery lol
Title: Re: Winter Nets
Post by: Simmy on January 11, 2012, 10:31:21 AM
you know its bad when i can bowl a short ball and it gets up head high lol

I'll probably be in net two, with the 2nd XI stars. Should be interesting I think Brucie, Ifti, Abid, Matty,Filo are all turning up, possibly Clifton. Might not be pretty on that surface.

Had my first net of the year yesterday. Our official pre-season starts in February, but some of the keener lads have been organising the odd ad-hoc net.

2 things:

1) I was awesome! I'm usually slow to get going when we finally start pre-season, plus I tend to get undone by the extra pace and bounce indoors, but yesterday everything clicked straight away. Was really quick on to anything short and pulled the ball well (normally a weakness for me) and my footwork was surprisingly nimble, getting my front foot out to the wider balls and driving well as opposed to just planting my front foot down middle stump line and playing away from my body. Bowling wise I hit a line and length straight away and bowled and didn't really bowl anything resembling a bad ball until towards the end when I started to tire (I batted first, so then bowled continuously for near enough 45 minutes) - alas, I fear I have peaked! Surely it's going to be downhill from here until the end of the season :(

2) I ache like a mofo today! Welcome to cricket in my thirties!

I think you must be the exception to the rule, most peoples first nets are normally shockers!. On the day of nets, I went to the gym, played 7-a-side footy and followed it with nets. I'm in my 40's now and not surprisingly it's taken 3/4 days to recover lol

1st session this morning and didnt feel too bad had a dabble on the bowling machine at 70mph for 10 mins then swapped to 2nd net with the real bowling and avoided getting cleaned out which was nice!

middle on the new wand seemed good...remfrys need some attention as they seemed to want to slip down the leg.

First net this Tuesday, team I don't know (long story but my team doesn't do nets now, used to hire Edgbaston but when only 3 people turn up, its embarassing) anyway my mate has invited me along, so team I don't know, I haven't batted for 8 years....................could be all the gear and no idea or.........................you never lose it, we will see.

Looking forward to it like I was a kid again.  :)

We don't get going till the end of feb as a club but I've had a few odd ones from november onwards and it definitely helps if you're not one of these year round sportsmen you get! Noone likes that first full blooded delivery that aches from your finger tips down to your opposite sides big toe! I go to the recently refurbished nets at Hove which are an excellent facility.

As a new team I have been running nets since October, wanted to make sure the team knew each other by the time we play our first game.

Now I have the running of nets spot-on. 2 and a half hours
Net 1 Bowling Machine
Net 2 Spinner
Net 3 Fast bowlers
Net 4 One-on-one batting coaching (with the local Pakistani Pro/level 3 Coach)
Three batsman rotate between the three nets and if we have time at the end we have a quick game of tape ball (the young kids love that).

The team has bonded really well and I am getting loads of new players wanting to join.

Superbly well organised.... Need to sort ours out later as tricky when we have 5 adult teams and 4 nets and no idea who will turn up!!
Title: Re: Winter Nets
Post by: jblowe on February 01, 2012, 09:22:16 AM
One thing really helped was that I took a blank book with me. As some of my lot would always turn up late, then want to bat. Now I get the most respected player to sign players in as they turn up, they put there name in the book and there money in to a box.

We then bat in the order they are listed in the book, if we complete the list, we start again, No body is late and nobody leaves without paying.

I use the bowling machine to time how long each player spends in each net.  when I have finished the bucket of balls they move to the next net.  I try to get the them 15-20 batting, but it depends on how many turn up.  Most nights we get 20-30

We need the practise as one of our first games is against the Might Hosk

Had our first ones on Sunday, think we were the first cricket team in there this year as the matting looked like it was corrugated having been rolled up for so long, made for "interesting" batting conditions!
As a club that struggles for batting we managed our normal thing of attracting a couple of new bowlers  :( ah well the more the merrier.

We're struggling big time this year for nets. THe bloke who owns the ones we use every year has died unfortunately and the family don't want to keep it running. So that's 4 adult teams and a full youth section with no winter training. Gonna be an interesting start to the new season in a newer, better league. Shame really because I was coaching the adult teams as well.

The Ridings School in Winterbourne. Been there a couple of years now and it's generally good plus they've added a bowling machine this year.
Where do ODCC net?

I absolutely despise now it's an academy with their new-found ignorance. I'd probably get charged to use the bowling machine. When I have a day off I might try and get the bowling machine all day, only problem is there might be P.E lessons in the hall.

They are at abbeywood AKA Filton! Is decent in there. Castle is the best school around here imo though.

I captained our school team in a T/20 vs Castle a couple of years ago on an artificial. As there were only 3 of us who played cricket I opened and had loads of fun facing their county bowler digging them in. I second top-scored with 7.
