Title: Spartan Cricket
Post by: kaustav on January 08, 2012, 05:23:03 AM
A Shout out to everyone, specially my Aussie friends, what do we need to know about Spartan Cricket and their bats? I hear that Michael Clarke has signed a contract in excess of a million dollars with them. Any opinions?

I know they are Indian made and people hate their stickers but with the signing of Pup they are heavily in the spotlight. Just wondering if any one has pictures of their equipment? I think there was a thread created here a little while back when they signed Mitch J but it was like a page long..lol

Just terrible:

Gloves and Pads look ok:

Mate of mine has the SP20 gloves, and they actually feel pretty good on the hands.

Title: Re: Spartan Cricket
Post by: Hads45 on January 08, 2012, 09:14:37 AM
To anyone who sais they are awefull I ask how much have you used them? A bat splitting in half can happen in any brand at any time, its the nature of the business. Its happened to GM, GN, Slaz, Adidas, Puma bats etc before too, its just the way it goes.

I will tell you first hand for absolute middle quality these are close to the best going around. The one thing about these bats is they are significantly a heavier made bat, however I know they are looking to change that next season so it will be interesting how they turn out with a lighter pickup. Having spoken to staff at two large retailers both agreed the middle on these were the best in the shop. At Kingsgrove Sports they have custom made Spartan Bats to players specs and they were close to the best 'pinging' bats that staff had seen. They all had edges 40-45 millimetres and pinged. They were made to the shapes of Dhoni, Tendulkar, Ponting, Pollard and Dilshan, although not all were that accurate.

They are indian made and run by Ian Wills (used to work at Slazenger). Stickers were horrible in first year...they are slightly better second year but still not great. There softs are very good and very affordable for Australian prices. There top range pads only retail at $85 and they have good gloves (even the $30 ones).

I don't care what anyone says, stickers help sell bats and these are just awful. They may well be awesome bats but someone please sack the graphic designer.

I agree the stickers are terrible but the quality of the bats are good. And those retail staff actually said the quality of the bats were better than other brands, so it wasnt a diplomatic response.

Taz Ahmed, quite a character! He loves Michael Clarke, he is his favourite cricketer.

He reckons he is mates with the guy who used to either make/deal with (shipping presumably) Clarkes Slazenger gear. And this mate had managed to get him a Slazenger bat intended for Clarke. I've seen it and it was certainly nice, comparable with other pro bats I've seen.

Since Clarkes move to Spartan, Taz's mate has been unable to get Spartan gear, so Taz has stickered up his Slazenger bat with Spartan stickers from eBay. And because he loves Clarke, he got the fibre facing too.

He begs us to get him a Spartan bat every time we see him, he can't understand why they haven't launched in the UK.

It's a shame Spartan are seemingly re-enacting the 'Cartman-Land' episode from South Park. Ie 'look how amazing all this stuff is, by the way, you can't have it'

Yes, this is at vast cost though. The only stockists are in Australia, and with the currency exchanges + shipping, buying Australian from the UK is not worth it financially at the moment.

I know Jason at CSO in America eventually got some legit ones direct from Spartan after ranting and raving about the fakes he got, if that's the sort of hoops someone like me would have to go through to stock spartan then I'll pass.

Any idea why Australian market is soooo expensive ?

I imagine its to do with currency variations. That and the costs of shipping stuff there, it is soooo far from anything else.

Cut down an English tree

send it to India to be made

then send to Australia to a dealer/distributor (in most cases i believe)

dealer then sells to retailer, that's a lot of stages for the price to go up.

When I lived there I noticed things made in Europe, or at least from European companies, like toiletries, cosmetics  or certain 'luxury' foodstuffs were significantly more expensive. So maybe there is a higher import tax on European goods.
Title: Re: Spartan Cricket
Post by: Sykesy51 on January 04, 2013, 03:08:34 AM
The Australian market is only expensive to people dealing in British Pounds and US Dollars due to how weak these currencies are at the moment in comparison to the Australian Dollar.

Prices in Australia and New Zealand have not increased - it is simply that the British Pound and US Dollar have weakened massively.  AU$600 is now approximately GBP400/US$620 whereas in November 2008 AU$600 was only GBP240/US$400.

There is no reason for bat prices in Australia to come down just to stay in line with the UK/US traditional pricing.

As an Englishman now living 'Down Under' I remember a time (less than five years ago) when purchasing bats from the Southern Hemisphere was very popular and incredibly lucrative.  It is simply swings and roundabouts and, if the US sorts it's economy out, then I'm sure things will swap around again.

I hope that makes sense.

Launching in another country is pretty tricky and can be an easy way to f a brand up. Finding the right distributor, manufacturer, pricing and product is not easy task - so I expect Spartan are taking their time.

One company blew half a million on a launch in one country, and didn't sell a bat. It's so easy to get it wrong.

SPARTAN were/are still a small Company who managed to sign much bigger player due to a sudden injection of $$ into the cricket side.

Even their main store used to have no more than 10-20 bats and almost 1000 soccer and basketballs. (even up until last year)

Cricket was like 5% of their business.

Should contact GCCC in that case and ask if they cover the damage.

They are organic material so any weak area will end in breakage! If it's not old then it should be covered!
A breakage can happen to any brand bat....the important thing is that it is replaced/repaired if it's not an old bat!

Saying that, I agree that Spartan charge far too much for the quality!!

Think I've played against you and remember seeing your spartan bat (MC version) last season, Datchet 3's keeper? Sounded horrible, looked a size too small and thought to myself it was a stickered bat (but as you said you got it from GCCC). Didnt sound right to me.
Anyway, worth dropping a email to spartan or GCCC.
I understand its organic material and bound to break, but at the price spartan charge, I would have thought their bats would last more than 1 season

That bat has had a seriously good life span, and a seriously good life! Far too many runs with that gun. How long will it last?!
