Having seen a couple of threads suggesting that Redback bats take quite a long time to knock/play in I wondered if anyone else had experience of this? Is it a general trait of Redbacks a bit similar to the Charlie French bats that have been discussed on here of late?
Any feedback greatly appreciated, just wondering how patient I might need to be with the one I bought at the end of the season

Laver's are notorious for taking a while to play in too aren't they?

Correct.
-
So I hear, not had the pleasure of owning one yet though.
Don't mind showing I bit of patience just want to be aware of it before I give it its first run out so I am not disappointed!
-
Well I have no Redback experience, but with my Laver it did feel noticeably kind of stiff - at the time I put that down to the carbo handle too, though in retrospect it might have partly been due to the pressing too. I don't think that affected performance though. Although the bat felt a bit 'tinny' when you struck the ball it still flew! Over time the feel of the bat got better and better (partly as I got used to it's stiffness maybe) and at its peak it performed as well as felt sublime

Redbacks do take a while to get going through a lot of knocking in and then quite a bit of time of playing in on the bowling machine. I think is to do with how Gary presses them but once they have been played in they really fly. My Paradox LE still hadn't really got going when I sold it - I just ran out of patience with it.
-
Cheers for the feedback mate. Mine was apparently destined for a pro before I nabbed it so might be pressed to be a bit more instant but I will certainly bear this in mind. Any idea how much knocking in you gave yours?
-
No wonder know one has a clue about knocking in! Pressing creates a hard layer.knocking in replicates a hard layer yet a soft layer absorbs energy.. yet a stiff( hard pressed),unknocked bat feels dead and the pros use almost unpressed bats that fly.. oh and to compond this the thin layer mirroring a firmly pressed bat) of a laminate acts as a trampoline... HELP!!!!!!!! :( :)
-
Quite a while. Gary pre-knocked it for me but I don't know for how long and further knocking in was recommended in the region of a round 10 sessions of 10-15mins.
The blade did feel quite stiff and I must have knocked it in for around 2-2.5 hours in total before I was advised to get on the bowling machine with it to try and open it up.

I've had three and they have all gone like rockets from the word go!
-
Looks like it varies then, will have to pick up the knocking in pace before first indoor nets at the end of the month and see how it goes

The way I batted last year, maybe I just didn't find the middle ???
-
My LE paradox feels pretty good from the off.
-
I don't know how much knocking my Paradox LE will require but I can say when I started to knock it the face got indented and it is still not even so it will take sometime before it is evened out.
-
Yea mine is the same at the moment after a couple of hours knocking in, all good things come to those who wait :)
-
i've got a pair of paradox LE's from the pro direct sale, they are knocking in just fine. a pair of premier cru's which i imagine are going to take a while to knock in and a pair of lavers which despite me asking for them being pressed to go from the start as i'd returned a bat to James which i couldn't get to open up at all, i think will take the longest of the lot to knock in, i'm guessing they won't get any match use until the following season. The redbacks are knocking in very well though and are starting to feel much like my newberys and i'm pretty confident they will be my main match bats this season
-
Thanks Sherpa, let me know how you get on with them
-
Does Sherpa75 have a Noah's ark of cricket bats, hurrah hurrah?
Would love to see a photo of the full collection
-
it's half hidden in various corners so the mrs doens't count them all ... a couple arrived from Matt H4L yesterday for my birthday :D
-
You buy pairs everytime?
-
incase one breaks !! not everytime, but quite often
-
must have massive bat collection!
-
One for anyone who felt their redback took time to get going - did Gary knock it in for you?
I got a paradox last September and being lazy I paid for Gary to knock it in (no idea if this was by hand or machine). Only used it once but I got 47 not out and it felt really good, a few big hits included. From reading all these comments I'm tempted to knock it in some more to see if it gets even better.
-
I've had a few Redbacks now, and they've pretty uniformly flown after giving them an hour or two with the mallet (I'm too lazy/impatient to knock bats in properly)
-
I got my Redback two years ago, Got Gary to knock it in. As with all his bats he issues a letter saying that it has had about 3/4 hours by hand but it still requires a further 3/4 hours, So did 2 or so more hours then took it to nets against old balls,
I would say after two seasons it has come to life completley the rebound is fantastic.
So all those saying they didnt get much from their Redback, Patience Grasshopper
-
That's interesting, I didn't get a letter like that with my redback. When I asked Gary if he recommended that I do anything else to prep the bat he just said to oil the toe a few times and stick some shoe goo on it but that was it. Maybe he's changed the way he knocks the bats in.
I reckon I will knock it in a bit more before I use it again.

I've had a Paradox LE from new, and a Allegiance Premier second hand.
I just rounded off and knocked in the edges for about 45 minutes and slowly started using it in nets. From the word go it responded very well.
The Allegiance on the other hand didn't have quite the same rebound and the previous owner said he had the same issue.
-
good tips lads, after thinking gary had forgotten me,he's just posted one of his out to me.
i generally oil it a couple of time and round the edges off-that's all
one of my mates spent 6 months knocking in his fav bat and it split down the centre in the 1st net session
so i leave it to the gods whether a bat will last these days
-
I got an Allegance which goes superbly well, and it's not even the LE.
But also an Paradox LE which goes superbly.
The only Redback which I used that didn't go well was the one Pedals had which seemed to take decades to loosen up!!! :(
-
Yes, the Paradox LE from Pro Sports Direct taps up very well indeed and doesn't feel like it will need much knocking in.
