My son is starting his firts full season playing this year and I have been thinking his bat, will need a size 5.
I don't want to spend a lot on a bat that he will use for one season and will become a garden cricket bat once he out grows it but I also want to get something that he will need to oil and knock in and will stand up to hitting a cricket ball as I will have to have a go with it :)
Any suggestions?

Depends on budget but my lad got an Ayrtek and is an awesome bit of wood I was jealous
-
I would go for South Asian brands; cheaper and should do the job. BDM, SS and SG should do the trick I feel.

Get him a Mongoose COR3. They are much, much bigger than most junior bats which are incapable of hitting the ball of the square, which means youngsters either use a bat 2 or 3 sizes too big or have to slash to hit boundaries instead of being able to caress a drive for four.

We have some very nice English willow junior bats. £48 in our sale. They are very nice little bats. Can send you some pics if you are interested.
Thanks

To help him develop good technique he'll need a nice light bat. Puma's are always very good junior bats and good value.

My 10 year old brother who has a fantastic technique formerly couldn't hit the ball to the boundary without having a swipe, but now with a thicker bat (Mongoose) he can play normally and properly and still get runs.
-
Something cheap, light and the right size - he'll grow out of it soon enough.
Honestly, who had a high spec bat as their first one?

I am aiming to spend around £30 tops, as he is growing so fast I think next season he will be onto a harrow and miss size 6 altogether. He has not got a technique as yet so this season is more to get him playing straight than of the square.

Good choice IMO. Light yet will be meaty enough to hit boundaries without slashing.

the puma kids bats are typically excellent.

Only problem with that is that they will be 2:11 regardless of what you orderr ;) lol
-
2,11 would give you massive edges in a kids size bat.

In my view you should buy an English Willow bat rather than Kashmir Willow. Kashmir Willow bats tend to be on the little heavier side compared to an English Willow bat. U can pick a junior English Willow bat betwen £30 to £40

I could not agree more, has to be english willow as none of us would use a kashmir bat. Asad if you kids bats are anything like the little CA you have up on the website I won't be looking anywhere else. :)

I bought my nephew a bulldog bat at the start of last season. Great bat, lasted last season and still loads of life left in it. He isnt the biggest of kids but manages to hit 4's with ease with it. He isnt the best of cricketers but found he is more confident if he has a bat that feels good when hitting the ball rather than a plank that hurts when the ball is hit.
-
Glad your nephews bat is still going well Burdy.
Have a couple of ew size 5 here. Anyone interested let me know and I will send some pictures over.
Thanks
