two minds....

distinction profile!

or massive bat like the bulldog..

needed oversized for distinction because of the massive spine.

have to see what ryan knocks up for me :D

:)

Simmy, when you buy a cleft from Matt, does the face need any profiling or is it just a case of a little sanding to finish it off?

I'm really wanting to make my own bat, fortunately my fathers a really keen carpenter do has all the tools apart from a draw knife.

Looks like a proper beast!

Title: Re: So this is what an oversize cleft looks like!
Post by: Simmy on January 23, 2012, 08:00:19 AM
the face of the cleft its pressed and ready to go.. just needs sanding and buffing!

be warned tho the pressing of these is pretty light they go very well but are soft.(requires lots of knocking in to make the willow stiff)

im guessing this is because once a bat is actually made it is pressed again depends on where the middle is etc

Post by: jamesisapayne on January 23, 2012, 08:08:18 AM
Ok thanks a lot. I never knew they bats were pressed twice - makes sense though.

I've got a big lignum mallet that would be up for the job I'm sure!

Can you specify grain amount?

well im not 100% they are but having had 3 of matts bats they feel diffrent to these clefts.

pm matt and he will give u a selection to choose from depending on grade etc the price will be diffrent

Updated pics of simmys bat, going for a M&H distinction profile. Just need to finish shaping then comes the concaving  :D

Ps still need the spine shaping etc so it's work in process!

Ah, ok. I have bought a Kunz No. 50 spokeshave and a No. 16 round bottom plane. Should do the job, no?

What's the weight currently and what is the target weight?

Was 3.14oz when arrived. haven't weighed it yet but prob around 3.4oz smallish 30mm edges with a spine of 70mm and should be around 2.12oz once finished.

Coming in the post, when they arrive I'll get pics up as well as my bat-making attempt. Getting a cleft from Gary at Redback, just need to pay. Spokeshave:

This one is the standard flat bottom coffin Plane I made in to a round bottom plane. Just need to round of the blade and re sharpen.

How do you plan on rounding the blade?
Title: Re: So this is what an oversize cleft looks like!
Post by: Fezballoh on January 26, 2012, 06:36:04 AM
Should be able to round it off on a banch grinder. Its tricky working with old steel though as it can be glass hard and therefore difficult to sharpen with regular metal files.
Title: Re: So this is what an oversize cleft looks like!
Post by: Ryan on January 26, 2012, 09:58:50 AM
yeah, just going to round it off with my bench grinder then re-sharpen.

Another update, just been doing a bit at a time. Haven't really had time to spend a decent amount of time on it yet.

Oh by the way this is based on the old 2010 distinction profile.

Spine height 75mm
Edge width 26mm

Pick up is bottom heavy as you would expect but not bad for 2.115oz naked (about 2.135oz with spiral grip)

been to romida today. Had a look at a 2'12 Distinction, toe profile on the current models looks reasonably beefy but I'd say a bit smaller than Simmy's. For £359 I wasn't very impressed tbh, a copy is definitely the way to go!
