very nice!!!
ud best use that to shape a mahooooosive beauty from!
-
two minds....
distinction profile!
or massive bat like the bulldog..
needed oversized for distinction because of the massive spine.
have to see what ryan knocks up for me :D
-
bind and grip it and its good to go surely
-
What the bat weigh as it is?
-
weight is just under 4lb lol picks up orate tbh haha
-
Little concaving, big spine!! Make a massive Purist! :D :D
-
Take a slight amount off and use like that. Boooooom time
-
masive concaving massive spine..
lol
-
just give it a sand and use it no point slimming a beast like that! :)
-
Going to take me ages but i'm sure a distinction profile would look good.
-
no rush mate not like im short on bats lol
-
Did you get this cleft from h4l?
-
yes :)
-
bind and grip it and its good to go surely
:)
Simmy, when you buy a cleft from Matt, does the face need any profiling or is it just a case of a little sanding to finish it off?
I'm really wanting to make my own bat, fortunately my fathers a really keen carpenter do has all the tools apart from a draw knife.
Looks like a proper beast!
-
the face of the cleft its pressed and ready to go.. just needs sanding and buffing!
be warned tho the pressing of these is pretty light they go very well but are soft.(requires lots of knocking in to make the willow stiff)
im guessing this is because once a bat is actually made it is pressed again depends on where the middle is etc
-
Ok thanks a lot. I never knew they bats were pressed twice - makes sense though.
I've got a big lignum mallet that would be up for the job I'm sure!
Can you specify grain amount?
-
well im not 100% they are but having had 3 of matts bats they feel diffrent to these clefts.
pm matt and he will give u a selection to choose from depending on grade etc the price will be diffrent
-
Great, thanks a lot Simmy.
-
Updated pics of simmys bat, going for a M&H distinction profile. Just need to finish shaping then comes the concaving :D
Ps still need the spine shaping etc so it's work in process!

Concaving :o
-
Looks like its going to be a beauty
-
Concaving :o
Not yet...that's the finishing touch :D
-
How are you gonna concave it?
-
just bind it, grip it and give him it like that :D
-
Got 3 round bottom planes different widths.
-
What's the weight currently and what is the target weight?
-

Simmy would probabily go for that lol

Ah, ok. I have bought a Kunz No. 50 spokeshave and a No. 16 round bottom plane. Should do the job, no?
-
What's the weight currently and what is the target weight?
Was 3.14oz when arrived. haven't weighed it yet but prob around 3.4oz smallish 30mm edges with a spine of 70mm and should be around 2.12oz once finished.

Should do, fancy posting some pictures of them?
-
Coming in the post, when they arrive I'll get pics up as well as my bat-making attempt. Getting a cleft from Gary at Redback, just need to pay. Spokeshave:

Nice, look forward to seeing it
-
Hopefully be finished by the weekend. I'll post some pictures once complete with full specs.
-
good lad :)
any why concaving? because the distinction has concaving! lol
top work ryan like normal ;)
-
This one is the standard flat bottom coffin Plane I made in to a round bottom plane. Just need to round of the blade and re sharpen.

-
How do you plan on rounding the blade?
-
Should be able to round it off on a banch grinder. Its tricky working with old steel though as it can be glass hard and therefore difficult to sharpen with regular metal files.
-
yeah, just going to round it off with my bench grinder then re-sharpen.
-
Another update, just been doing a bit at a time. Haven't really had time to spend a decent amount of time on it yet.
Oh by the way this is based on the old 2010 distinction profile.
Spine height 75mm
Edge width 26mm

cant wait to see this finished :D
-
well ryans pretty much finished the bat :)
still looks massive! think it needs a bit more concaving for propa M&H profile but looks pretty good to me :D

Main difference is that it's got smaller edges. Spine is massive :D taps up nice too.
-
what is pick up like? or does it feel far to heavy for u to judge pal?
-
Awesome!
-
Pick up is bottom heavy as you would expect but not bad for 2.115oz naked (about 2.135oz with spiral grip)
-
we can allways tweak it lad! its not like there is not enough wood to play with :D
u building shed in morning mate?
might pop round again have a look at the bat and help before football
-
Looks good lads. The toe should be smaller, this will help with pic up.
Here's a pic of how it should look

Fletch is doing a sterling job so far
-
I imagine a slightly smaller, flatter toe will do wonders for the pickup.
-
haha (No Swearing Please)!!!! take some more weight out if u want mate :D
2.12 would be perrrrrfted but that mb bat ive got feels perfect at 2.15
-
Opps think I removed my comment by accident :(

been to romida today. Had a look at a 2'12 Distinction, toe profile on the current models looks reasonably beefy but I'd say a bit smaller than Simmy's. For £359 I wasn't very impressed tbh, a copy is definitely the way to go!
-
bat is pretty much finished just stickers to go on 2night :D
-
Then be sure to post some pictures! :D
-
i will :)
-
I love that shape!!
