Depends on the extent of the damage. You can put up some pictures for people to help you better.

Wood glue and clamp normally work and a bat tape too is helpful but everything might depend on the particular case.

This one is a bit more complicated I feel; but with my little knowledge I think wood glue and clamp might be a start and then some tape work. What do others feel?

Would rather avoid the tape! If I may ask what's a clamp mate?

May be worth sticking some dowel through it as well.

Good idea Nathan.

@ Scott: something like a plier with two arms which will hold the two ends together strongly after you glue them together.

Oh silly me! I knew what a clamp was. Just thought there was a different type of clamp that was used in woodworking lol

There are: you can get some good clamps where you can control the pressure applied. Search on fleabay and you will get some idea and perhaps a good deal as well.

just carefull not to dent the bat when clamping- what do you guys do to ensure this doesn't happen?

Rather than using a clamp it may be better to cut an old grip into 1 inch pieces and stretch it over the toe.

Cut an old grip up, into pieces about 2-3 inches, and you can use that as a clamp.
It's been discussed on here about using that, I can't remember which site its on

I will take your advice seeing as I haven't done it before. Mind giving me a link to the dowel you use mate?
Title: Re: Toe repairs
Post by: wilkie113 on January 23, 2012, 12:29:56 AM
I'd be careful about putting dowel in, as it needs to be a snug fit, and using a normal drill may make a hole that isnt perfectly round so this may cause the dowel to not be snug. Unless you know of somewhere with a pillar drill that you can put a hole into the bat with, and then get a dowel in nice and tight!

sounds a bit complicated and I don't have the materials so I think I will just follow the M&H method. Can I use that fevibond adhesive glue or does it have to be super glue?
Title: Re: Toe repairs
Post by: wilkie113 on January 23, 2012, 12:33:45 AM
When I repaired a bat of mine I used wood glue, if its a little thick water it down a bit, and make sure it gets right into the crack. I think you may be better off clamping that crack, as its a bit bigger than ones on the M&H site, but I'm not someone in the know about bat repairs really. It might be worth waiting a couple of days seeing if anyone who has repaired bats comments and gives you some advice on what to do mate :)

Yeah I think it is best not to rush into this one as It could wreck the bat. What wood glue did you use wilkie mate?

I agree with Tom. See if someone gives you more inputs; the dowel stuff would need precision.

I just went to my local DIY store and got some wood glue mate.
I don't think it matters about a specific type mate :)

I repaired a few team mates bats, but nothing to the extent of what your's needs!
Putting the dowel in, would need a pillar drill I think, as like I said the other hand held drills you cant be precise with!

The M&H picture is a good one as you can see they're using off-cuts of willow to save the bat from the clamps.

I believe alot of people use 6mm dowel for bat repairs. Definitely reccommend the pillar drill option if you have access to one but if you've got a steady hand you should be OK with a battery drill if you can secure the bat in place while you're drilling into it.

When you buy wood glue make sure it is wood glue and not just PVA as they are different things!

I glued this crack that went right through the bat and it's still holding after several net sessions. I've been told by a batmaker that the glue is stronger than wood and should hold without dowels. Seen a mates m&h repaired by the same guy with glue for a similar length crack from the shoulder downwards, he played all season without an issue - even won the division batting award using the bat.

Biggest issue is stopping the crack extending up the bat, you really have to get glue into the source of the crack to be certain of it holding.

That's useful information, I'd have thought most people would have dowled a crack that big. Perhaps dowelling may help anchor the break to stop it spreading up the bat though?

I have heard that it will stop the crack extending. I glued another bat in similar condition and the crack just went up to the shoulder instead!

Here is the work I have done to the toe. I am pretty pleased with myself as it was my first attempt and the bat has really held together well. Survives medium pace In the nets so pretty happy. Thanks for all the tips guys!
