Right, I've got a blue ayrtek premier with a steel grille sat in my basket ready to checkout at itsjustcricket. Using their 10% off code for forum members it's a bargain at just under £70 including delivery.
I've just got a couple of little worries stopping me buying it. Main thing is how well they fit for people with larger heads, now my head is not a virtual planetoid with its own weather system (if you've not seen so I married an axe murderer you won't get this) but its not tiny. Just wrapped a tape measure round my forehead and its 61 cm so within but near to the max size.
I did see a thread on here with some of my larger headed brothers saying it was snug and the grille came very close to their faces. Now I think there was talk of a new grille shape sorting this. Does anyone with a largeish head own a premier and is the fit ok in terms of the helmet itself and the grille.
Second one which might sound a bit daft was is the steel grille actually metallic looking? An older thread had a grille that was sort of white looking as though the grille was coated somehow. All the pics on the Internet show the steel grille as looking metallic which I think looks far better. No doubt I'll upgrade at some point to a titanium grille if I get on with the helmet but for now steel is fine.
If anyone can reassure me a bit then I'll add an ayrtek to the two new bats, pads, gloves, bag, sidearm and other bits that I've bought since joining this forum.
Thanks

I think the Steel grille is more metallic looking now, Iand123 has a premier and did a review a couple of weeks ago, it's in the Ayrtek section.
I'd say go for it mate, the fit is excellent as is the protection.
Anyway, I doubt they will go overnight, so you can spend a bit of time mulling over your decision if you need to mate :)

Tom's service is excellent too

The steel grills are powder coated in white on the ones in stock with the retailers...the new batch will be in grey that are en route to us ATM. These also have a larger angle on the bottom bar to move it away from the chin further (some forum members trialled the Ti version of these prior to use having a larger volume of steel ones made up).
Fit wise the sizing is just a guide as we had to specify some parameters with the BSI when filling out the copious amounts of paperwork. We have customers wearing them who have bigger heads than 61cm (like an orange on a toothpick!!).
Any issues with it let Paul or myself know and im confident we can ensure your a happy customer :)

As one if the larger headed people on the forum who has the larger Ti grill, I'd recommend it. I had a largemasuri and with the new grill it is a much better fit.

only a few minor changes were made as a result of the feedback off the forum....comparism of the two below

Go to a shop and try it on. they are pretty much stocked everywhere now
-
As one of the larger headed people the fit is great although I use an Albion ti grille I've heard the new Ayrtek ones fit just as well
-
I've got a fat head, and the new larger grilles are excellent. Was a bit too snug with the older style grille I must say. Outstnding helmets though. Which reminds me - must contact Tom for a respray!
-
I love my ayrtek, great lids

I've got a pretty big head (similar measurements to yours) and my old masuri ti didn't really fit properly. It felt like it was sitting on top of my head as opposed to around the top of my head. I was always worried about buying an Ayrtek without trying it on but after months of thinking about it I took the plunge. The fit is really superb, the air lining makes it much more of a snug fit for the meatball heads of this world. Haven't used it in nets yet but from wearing around the house it feels really nice. I was amazed at the lightness as well (although I did upgrade to a ti)

I have had my Ayrtek for 2 years now, And it is a great lid, Very comfortable, Only had to change the grille due to my large head.
-
Thanks for all the replies to this, they've helped make up my mind and i will be getting an ayrtek this season. Only thing is I might wait for the new colour/shape grill to come out as I prefer the colour and it'll probably fit me better. Just means I miss out on the itsjustcricket offer but I reckon it'll be better.
Cheers

get the lid now and see if tom will offer a swap on the grill?
hes a top lad like that ;)
-
Happy to do that if you want to...only got 1 of the new steel grills left in the office from the first batch of 200 we had sent over...another 300 will be here next week and another 1000 in late February so we wont run out!
That way you dont miss out on the discount with Its Just Cricket :)

I fully agree with you! I had been wearing Masuri for a year and I thought it is like that (eg sitting on top of my head) so I kept on playing and wearing that LOL.
Ayrtek fits extremely well!

Tom - thanks for the kind offer on the grill but I may be tempted by a titanium now.
SCS have the titanium on their website for £88 so I'm debating whether to order from them, very tempted but not sure if I really need one.
-
£88 including shipping?
If yes then it is a bargain with Ayrtek titanium grill cost around £44 if I'm not mistaken.
Titanium are definitely worth it!
Tom? He is amazing guy, I can go all day but he is seriously a top bloke!
-
Ti grills are their own are £44.99....Premier Helmets with steel grille is £79.99.
Upgrade to a Ti with is £30 which = £109.00 on our website but retailers will offer it cheaper as you have discovered :) By comparism our grills are considerable more affordable than other brands that market them at £60+
Thanks for the kind words ;)
-
I think it was £9 for delivery so £97 overall, pretty good deal really.
I'm going to have a think about it but will probably end up getting a titanium soon.
-
In the end I spent a bit more and have a titanium on its way today from itsjustcricket.
Should be here anytime before 1, feels like christmas all over again.
-
Ayrtek has just arrived and as other people have said its so light I didn't think anything was in the box. Only had time to open it up and try it on quickly but so far it looks really good.
-
glad to have you on board :D
-
As well as my comments on the bulldog bat on another thread I also used my ayrtek for the first time tonight. Felt very light and comfy but I noticed I didn't really have to pump much if any air in to get what felt like a good fit. The chin strap worked well and the lid didn't wobble at all. Not sure if it's any cooler than my old helmet yet but Im chronically unfit and sweat like I'm in a steam bath when I do the slightest bit of exercise.
One thing I did think was that the gap between peak and grill seemed a bit narrow so I might alter that to make it bigger (I know this defies the safety advice).
-
Ditto I just have the steel version, which I bought on Saturday. It's a fine piece of kit, much better visibility than my old Albion, and perfect for my massive swede!
-
Glad you boys like them! :)
-
Get my first net on Sunday so I'll give my ayrtek it's first outing and report back then ;-)
-
Basic boring question coming. Whats the weight difference between the Premier and the Raw?
-
Basic boring question coming. Whats the weight difference between the Premier and the Raw?
a coat of paint?? ;)
-
I mean Elite, but Im sure it is more than a coat of paint!
-
i know the elite.raw is around
600-610g
premier is about 960g with steel grill
-
Simmy is correct, premier has a high impact plastic shell whils the raw has a carbon fibre/Kevlar shell maing it alot lighter. Hence the difference in price duets different material being used.
-
A premier with a titanium grill weighs 778g, a fraction heavier than a masuri steel. But you don't notice the weight as its a light grill hanging off the front rather than a heavy steel one dragging it down
-
Thanks Liam :)
