Title: Strange happenings to an Older Umpire
Post by: art on March 18, 2009, 09:09:02 AM
After my last post about thinking of retirement a couple of very senior umpires, two of very few I call my peer group, have convinced me to stay on. Never does any harm to listen to your peer group who should be folks you trust implicitly.

To top the positive things off I have been selected in the QCC Over 60 team to play a NSW selction Over 60 next week. This will be a very enjoyable carnival.

I still play a little yes. A few recent outings have been interesting to say the least. The furious fast bowler is now very gentle medium due to a knee problem and fast singles are out but games are just as enjoyable know as ever. In fact one of my team mates destroyed me in a game many years ago. He always was and still is a class bowler and played a lot of Sheffield Shield.

Playing also certainly helps umpiring not just only in the fitness sense but also in being able to judge the pace of the game. I hate it when you see an umpire who is umpiring at some other pace, you have to blend in with the game rather be some stand out on the field.
