Title: New Kicks - Something a Little Different
Post by: shirazi_r on February 17, 2012, 05:33:01 AM
While I see most of you lads are having your trainers spiked up or rocking fresh new Adidas spikes, most of us here in Canada are reduced to playing on AstroTurf pitches :( What this means is that spikes are a no-no save for a few games in the season when we play on turf. I don't fancy owning multiple pairs of shoes so I snagged a pair of Adidas spikeless (AstroTurf?) boots from my mate. After using them for about a week, I'm absolutely appalled that anyone play cricket in such shoes. They were far too heavy and seriously lacked traction on grass.

Anyhow, I ditched the Adidas' and decided to try out turf football boots as I remember playing a season outdoors in turf boots. I came across these at a local shop and decided that if they weren't great for cricket I'd just end up using them for football anyhow so not too big a risk.

Thank goodness I bought them! The leather is exceptional, the fit is excellent, they're lighter than any pair of cricket shoes I've seen and they offer excellent traction both on AstroTurf and outdoors on grass (provided it's reasonably dry). Naturally, they lack some of the padding cricket shoes have around the side but the toe is nicely reinforced and they provide a reasonable amount of support below the ankle.

Of course, the outdoor season isn't in full swing yet, and these shoes aren't ideal (in fact, try and avoid using them) for concrete but time will tell how they hold up.

Anyhow, they're called the Nike Tiempo Mystic IV's and they ran me about 27 pounds which is a rather good deal if I may say so myself :)

Not a bad call, in fact they do share similar characteristics as cricket shoes.

Yup, most football boots, especially the "ultra-light" style wouldn't work for cricket but anything more traditional can actually work quite well. One thing I found is that the leather on football boots is soooo much better than most trainers or cricket shoes.

Probably, but I suspect the cricket police don't make their 'round way to Canada all that often.  ;)

By the looks of it the 'style police' don't put in too many appearances either  ;)

Likely not, but then again, I'd rather not have the opposing eleven lusting over me  ;)

I'd have you banned from the field if you turned up wearing those for a league game.

Fair enough, but Artificial pitches, drinking on the sidelines and fistfights aren't tradition yet I've seen all of those 'round these parts. Cricket isn't even close to being a developed sport on this side of the world and so for now, we just make do. What should be outlawed however is the lime green zinc Umar Akmal smears all over his lips, not that's just wrong.
