Hi guys, been working on this laminate for Nick Saunders, just wanted to see if it was possible to make one out of two old battered bats.
Nick bought two old bats and asked me to have a go at making one massive bat out of them.
Here are the processed i had to go through;
Choose the best condition bat to use for the main part and decide which to use as the back
Chop off the handle and a little bit of the toe
Plane the donor bad face flat (give a better base to glue to the main bat)
Cut the back of the main bat to give a base to glue to donor bat to
Glue them both together
shape (using both drawknife and round bottom spokeshave)
Re-shaped the handle and re-bound
sand
Oil/ buff
Sticker
Enjoy :D
fee free to comment, its not perfect but i found it very had to match the two together as the main bat had a slight bow to the blade.

How does it go? Looks a top effort! However I think you might be able to guess that this is a lam 8)
-
Looks like fun. Is it just me or is the bat thinner at the top as in width wise? Could just be the pics.
How do you think it will hold up against a ball? What shape were you aiming for?

really? whys that? :D

Big thanks to Pedals for the bats. I would of given the project a go but the wife banned me from using power tools (on account of my alleged dyspraxia). Glad I didn't as it's been a real labour of love for ryan!
Bat is slightly thinnner as Ryan needed to blend the rounded edges in on the top bat. Will give it a go with the bowling machine tomorrow.
We were aiming for a colly training bat but I think it tops out at 2'14-15? Edges are huge 45mm+?

i think its the pictures but ill check later on tonight. it should be fine against a ball but again will find out this weekend.
Wasnt really aiming for a shape as such. just wanted to keep as much weight in the middle as possible. I've been restricted on the shape due to the size of timer used.

i'll have to confirm edge size later but weight it about 2.12oz

Lovely work! Glad the old bats came in useful too....so nice to see them being recycled into something so awesome!

thanks, got another one to make now lol
-
I'd ask you to make me one if I had any old bats left..... ;)
Seriously, top work, I'm really, really impressed, make sure to let us know how it goes in the nets. :)

i think its a mixture of pic angles and the stickers dimensions top and bottom that cause this effect.
-
how about putting some 6mm dowel rods into it at 45 degree angle to re-enforce the joint of the bubble section to the blade?
Could find that the back part falls off it the glue fails when being used against the balls
-
ryan does have 2 spare but I'm not sure what he has planned for them.
Just thinking Ryan, regarding the rounded edges on any future bats - worth taking the top bat and planing flat the spine and turning upside down onto the handle bat? Need a decent size edge to make a spine or could do a smaller edged distinction lammy?
-
Puts my Frankenstein effort to shame!!!....a true Monster from various body parts

could do but that would make the bat the same width as the edges then you would have to shape and make it even smaller.
only way to do it would be if the face of the bubble was planed even more or if the back was made out of a waste bit of willow or something. think im going to have a go at making a proper lam in the next month of so.
-
or you could just buy a kashmire blank at 4lb?
the whole point was to make a heavy bat and its 2.12 one big epic fail tbh
top work tho ryan to make it look anywhere near a bat as i bet it was a ball ache!
next project make a lam but get two clefts! might be much easier! lol
-
you're so negative Simmy lol
-
its cos ive still got monk on about wednesday
-
Yeah, thats what i said simmy. Get a part made and an un-pressed and un-handled cleft and away i go lol.

what happened wednesday?

it's definitely the easier / less time consuming (but more expensive) route
-
Brought me out of hiding, I'm liking your thought process Fletcheruk [Asian style Lam if you didn't know]
A little tip for the next one to get a good bond and the cheapest way I reckon would be binding the 2 pieces together with loads of thick string and then clamp the binding
But well played Fletch, well played
-
Cheers Norbs, any other tips?
i'm quite happy with it to be honest, not bad for a first go. Really need to try and make a proper one though.

1. Foxys mate is a bell end had a rock hard ball ryan asked him to change it and he wouldnt,
and kept bowling with it so i just left all the balls he bowled at me, and his attitude is (No Swearing Please) i wanna knock him out lol
2. you have introuced a chucker to the club(im not bothered but he does chuck it)
-
Same guy from St Annes CC? Don't think he chucks, just bowls like a girl with a limp wrist. I'll video some stuff next week. If I'm wrong we'll show him the evidence and suggest he makes some corrections. Didn't see the ball but remember you mentioning it. We asked Jamie Oliver 2-3 weeks ago to change his JJB special (which he got the hump about but it was funny). I'll have a proper look this week.
tbh - going to bang out an email on nets anyway. We like to have fun but every now and again I have to send a "calm down and be sensible" email out. Just reign back some of the bouncer stuff (cossie), wear white shirts (only 1 or 2) and remind guys not to bring rock hard balls!. I'll get Foxy to mention it to him as well.
-
sounds like a plan mate :)
i just thought it was a bit out of order that he didnt change it when asked propa wound me up :)
few of the new assian lads look promising :)

what assian lads? i only saw asian lads lol and yeah they did look decent
-
Asian lad and his son, 1 in each net. The father (he wasn't that old) was in your net and use to play in Central Yorks and Wetherby 1s, but not played for a while. His son plays for Heckmondwhite? or something, pretty decent cricketer but I don't think he is moving. Not spoken to them since and when I asked for net fees they disappeared but could be my charming personality!
Big Dave also brought a friend who was approx half his size lol - Looked a decent bowler and is very keen to get involved in the club. Our 2's are shaping up into a decent bowling unit, just wish they had some batting :D

It is good work mate like I said I liked it bought me out of CBF retirement to comment on it ;-)
pm'd a link and if you need anything email me you know where to find my email address
-
we'll see if we can get some video tomorrow of the "light lammy" in use.
-
Used the lam today and well it's still in one piece beleive it or not lol
Felt really good but that was with bola balls. have to see what it's like with real balls Wednesday :D
-
it has 45mm edges and is about an inch narrower than a normal bat. Ryan seemed to enjoy it today :D Bounced a cricket ball on it this evening and seems pretty responsive to me.
Might be the first hybrid training bat - wide enough and heavy enough to use in the nets
-
I'm really interested to know whether you've managed to make one good bat from two iffy ones!

this is the slaz and the kooks - were they the iffy ones?
-
I can't bare to look at this thread because the poor bubble got cut up, and I love them. I never got the chance to own one :(
Top work though :D, made something that looks good, from what at the beginning looked like a kookaburra making love to a slazenger :D
-

The Slaz wasn't, actually that was pretty good but the Kook Bubble was in quite a state and it was pretty old....That Bubble cost me £120 back in '92!! It was one of the most expensive bats about!
-
might have to submit it for the next batoff
-
This is just plain awesome. Big bat to! :)
