Title: IPL
Post by: stevie on March 22, 2009, 08:06:12 PM
As England could possibly host it this year what do people think of that?
I don't think it's good idea.

Should be held in South Africa IMO, the county championship and the West Indies return trip would clash with the IPL in England, and there would be the problem of what grounds to play at.

Also Setanta have the TV rights for the IPL in the UK, and if a deal would go through, I think that Sky Sports' nose would be put out of joint, as they only recently paid the ECB £300m for exclusive rights for cricket in England.

South Africa or Australia are my choices. England is ruled out. So the next best place to cash in and have assured profits are Australia and South Africa.

I think SA will bag it.

So will it be called International Premier League this year ;)

Could it be held in South Africa or Australia?  Isnt it their winter(s) when the IPL is supposed to be played?  I know they dont have winters like here, but im sure it would make a diff...

what date would the IPL be scheduled to start? got a feeling it would just miss the WI tour but could be wrong, imo it will go to SA

Start date of the IPL is April 10 and runs for 6 weeks, ends May 24. It definalty clashes with the Windies tour as the England players only have a 3 week stint to play.

Gary, the Cricket South Africa boss say they are prepared to host, so I think the weather should be fine.

Wel england seems to be the favourite at the moment, The self-appointed god of ipl Lalit Modi is coming to england today to speak to our very own sleazeball Giles Clarke

It will be a huge surprise if the IPL can be held in England, given their home schedule and the forthcoming county season.

I still feel SA have an edge and may finally end-up hosting the IPL's international version.

I think it is a good idea (though out of compulsion) to host IPL outside India as the younger Indian players will get an opportunity to feel and get accustomed to international ground and variations in the pitch and weather conditions which have a great impact on the course of any game.

Swinging wickets in England
Pace and bounce in Australia and SA
Slow, low and spinning tracks in India

A great learning curve for the youngsters (like Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina etc. from the last IPL) coming up the ranks.

I would imagine SA in april and may will be more lively than they are at the start of the summer, there has been a couple of bowler friendly wickets in the sa vs aus series. It seems that there is a lot of support within the indian board for England and with Modi coming here that suggests England are favourites. The SA cricket chief has even given an interview saying England are favourites as they havent actually heard anything from the IPL regarding further discussion.

The large asian community could be a big draw especially if they play at leeds, manchester, birmingham, london. I know the Yorkshire CEO isnt that keen but he will be keen for a barrow load of money! Does seem strange that Giles Clarke and cronies didnt want anything to do with IPL but now the Stanford deal has gone they are clambering for it.

I just worry we could be over-cricketed, bearing in mind the full county season, 20/20 world cup, WI tests and ODI as well as the biggest test series the Ashes. I would rather we be focused on that!

It can only be good for the sport and England. Cricketers can only learn from these players "playing in their backyard" and develop them. Fans can see more cricket 1st hand and get more involved!

South Africa seem to be the new favorites and if it goes there it is the right decision imo.

I agree I think South Africa is the best choice. I wish it would be held there every year!!

Bucko what the hell does that mean? The competition is called the Indian Premier League, it's not called the South African Premier League.

Defiantly the correct call if held in South Africa

It would be ridiculous to hold a international tournament here in march!

Yeah but I hate the subcontinent pitches and grounds!! South Africa should steal the tournament lol

From a financial point of view the benefits to the economy for us would be huge. Lalit Modi thinks around £100 million, they have 400 hotel rooms a night!

Of course you may piss off Sky in the process since they just paid £300 million for england cricket rights.

The best players in the world playing in england, sounds like a good idea to me!

Bucko - if the pitches where soo bad, how comes IPL 2008 was so sucessful?

Also there's nothing wrong with India's stadia. Chennai, Mumbai, Mohali, Delhi, Kolkata etc all Test venues, where always sold out in IPL 2008.

Sultan of Swing - I know that Lalit Modi said that IPL 2009 is due to earn £75-100m, but I highly doubt that ECB or Cricket South Africa will pocket the lot. Maybe 50% of gate fees and BCCI paying some sort of good will, say £10m. The franchise owners wouldn't give away all the profits just to ensure that IPL 2009 runs.

I think there would be very good crowds in england, better than aus and s.a probably depending on size of grounds.
Title: Re: IPL
Post by: Jeet on March 23, 2009, 10:19:46 PM
Sultan I never said that crowds in England would be bad, but compared to India they would be considerably less. For example Eden Gardens, Kolkata hold 100,000, wheres Lords holds 20,000? Gate fees would already be down by 80%.

Post by: sultanofswing on March 23, 2009, 10:31:57 PM
Yea i agree jeet there is the potential for loss by the franchise owners but benefits for the british economy. I am sure that the players would be rather be playing in front of 100,00 at eden gardens than 10,000 at say headingley in april!

Its worth remembering there will be very few hotel rooms in london avaliable at that time aswell... what with the Fa cup semi final and final and the london marathon.
Lords will also be out of action for the first game as the MCC are playing Durham there.

To be honest if the ECB can't guarantee at least 75% of the matches will be played at the major International venues, the ECB should say it's not feasible.

The IPL would be devalued if it was played at small out grounds.

Well cardiff, headingley and old trafford have all had there outfields relaid i dont know when they will be ready to use. But Yorkshires wasnt suppose to be laid until the beginning of april, but for some reason they seem to have started this week! I know they can play on it two weeks after its completed.

I'm not saying it wasn't a success, but from a personal point of view I prefer seeing the lush green outfields and crisp wickets of England and Australia rather than the dusty, patchy pitches of the subcontinent

IPL 2008 hardly had dusty, square turners, just ask Murali.

And I'm not sure what 'crisp' wickets are, but most of the pitches in OZ are flat, so they're more similar to Indian wickets.
