Title: SAF Hades
Post by: pacman75cricket on February 20, 2012, 08:46:58 PM
Sorry guys but thought I would start a quick review as loving this bat.  I know pics have already been posted elsewhere(delete if duplication).

Bat weighed 2lb 9.5oz when this bat left Andy.  I have since replaced grip with Combigrip & added scuff sheet so probably about 2lb10oz ish. Bat has mid-low middle(Andy said that is good for shape).

The bat has decent edge size about 32/33 mm but really impressed by spine height when compared with edge size.  Must say loving the shape. Cant believe the size.

Picks up really nicely although can feel lower middle but picks up well all the same.

Bat was sounding really nice off the mallet all over except right at the toe(to be expected)

So had first net session with the bat yesterday on the bowling machine about 15 mins or so (on a full length to try & get feet moving sorry Buzz feeding favourite shot).

Anyway the bat felt really nice on pickup hit a few drives middled a few  :o seemed to fly off the middle.  Will find out more when used real cricket balls but first impressions are this is gonna be an absolute gun.

Just needed to reduce user error. >:(

Looks good and hope it serves you well!

Not sure if its my eyes or was made like this deliberately but isn't the peak of edges down compared to highest point of spine which is a bit up? Aren't they suppose to be at same place?

Supposed to be like that ist Andy's offset edge so as to extend the middle :D

Yup, it means the pick up is lighter but manages the mass distribution better. It looks extreme on these hades but by god it works well!

the offset edge .. you cn see fro mthe photos, the deepest point of the edge is not in the same place as the deepest part of the spine , on the mechten, as with most bats it is

Nope, the mechten also has an offset edge. It is not as pronounced though!

Limited to 200 bats

200 per year.

This is due to the additional time taken to make the bat.

Speaking to Andy, 200 in total. It is the pinnacle of the combination of his experiments at a point in time. Next year, it won't be a hades...

How come the 'hades' is being limited to 200? It is that a marketing ploy?

In a word... no.

The Hades shape took a long time get get right so that it performs in a certain way. Its characteristics make it a destructive bat.

But making this bat takes longer, so as we can only make a certain amount of total bats per year we limited this shape to 200.

In keeping with the trend here is a little review of my Hades.

After reading a lot of Andy's posts and blog I had made up my mind that I had to have a bat from him :). So i looked at different profiles over and over on their site and from others, decision was to be made between Infinity and Hades, some email exchanges with Marcus and Hades was ordered.

Bat arrived yesterday, which was great as I was off work, along with some other goodies like the SAF Sleeve. This is an extremely well balanced bat, when i first picked it up it felt like they sent me the wrong weight but then i compared to some of the other bats i have and realized I was wrong. It feels fantastic off the mallet and when the ball is bounced on it. I spent the whole evening with this bat yesterday, wife was jealous, and have to say I like it more and more everytime I pick it up. Will spend a week or 2 knocking it in and try it out at nets along with the RPC.

Marcus was great to deal with too, for how busy he is, he got back to me every time I had a question or wanted to get in touch, and threw in a free goodie for good measure.

Also these SAF Sleeves are indeed sexy :), very very nice..

Now its pic time :)

Lovely lovely stick! How is the scuff sheet? It is special one so I wonder how it is.

Did you get thick oval handle?

Hows the ping compared to other bats you have/had (assuming those when they were unknocked etc)

Hey CD, I know you have been waiting for this as much as I have been :)

To be honest can't answer the scuff sheet question. It is supposed to be self healing so unless there is some damage I won't know but looks like a good quality sheet, I have 2 spares as well along with 5 puma one from liam (which should be here soon)

Handle needed another grip for my liking, not pictured, but feels good in hands now after i put another one on and yes it is oval. "Ping" is what is different on this bat, in a good way, I honestly couldn't tell it was unknocked just bouncing the ball but it was leaving seam marks, I can see a potential for a lot of bat speed generated with this bat and ball flying...just hoping my arm heals soon so i can take it nets...now just 2 bats left to arrive one from Hosk and one from Beachy :)

Yes, had been quite eager lol.

Nice nice! Hope it is your match bat this year :D

Did seam marks heal after you bounced the ball?

Wish I was in Halifax (actually correct version wish you were in TO) so I could see it in flesh. such shame lol

No they are still on the face just not as prominent, i have started with knocking in the toe so by the time i get to done with the face it should be good... as for match bat I am spoiled for choice this year between Hades & RPC plus the other 2 that haven't arrived :)

How many of teh 200 have been made now Norbs? They seem incredibly popular... And judging by Marcus' first edition, I can see why!!!

Thanks norbs. I have a question regarding the offset edge.

In SAF hades, the edge size reaches it's maximum below the spine's maximum.

If the edge size reaches it's maximum above the spine's maximum will it still be an offset edge ?

What would be the difference in these two scenarios ? Will both serve the same advantage of an offset edge?

Thank you!

Hope the admins dont mind, if you do please delete as appropriate....

@tim - Not sure mate but I am caning through them but as you know the season is still early and other shapes do get ordered

@m_a_c - edge offset below the spine for mmoi [mass moment of inertia] and the move of centre of percussion* [techie sweetspot] based on swing weight. You'll notice they are all different with similar middle specs this is intentional due to the way willow is i.e natural

If I rasied the edge above the spine it would have no really benefit based on this profile design as mmoi lowers the cop and I get more gain from willow mass of the spine height then you do on the edge

I have blogged the bat but dont really want to add a link out of respect to the advertisers

*centre of percusssion - easiest way of explaining this is when you hit a bat and flies off the bat and you think I hardly hit it.... when your hands move neither forward nor backwards on a strong shot

Hope Tushy doesn't mind

Spec was 2.10lb with 2 grips

- I think it got sent with one on therefore why Tushy needed to put on the second grip

Hey Norbs, no I dont mind :), bat is fantastic...have had it for 2 days now spent some 10-15 mins knocking it in last night...loving it more and more...thank you for a fantastic bat..I was talking to Cover Drive and I cannot get over how light the bat feels when you pick up yet on the scale it weighs 2lbs 10.7 oz...

Looking at the website appears middle elongated.

Also knowing Andy loved the shape can't imagine it changed too much but I'd speak to him.

Btw Hades is a beast

I dont know how big your hades is mate but my 2.10 is not a big bat, balance is nice and so is the pick up but when i first got the bat i was actually disappointed looking at it for 260GBP it had 5-6 wide grains and looked tiny...

rebound in the nets was good to ok but haven't even used it in a match and noticed the toe is starting to split... can't believe it  :(...

thansk Norbs, will give it some more time before anything...i understand that not all bats can be great despite the care and attention paid by the maker because willow is funny thing.

I am hoping to use it in a match this saturday and will get back to you after that...

here are some pics of the "split", i can't get myself to call it a crack as there is no compression due to a ball hitting it etc...anyways I took the scuff sheet off and its glued, shoegooed & rescuffed now

I did knock it in a lot too and have knocked a lot of bats so not sure if i did something wrong here...

I have knocked it in for about an 1 every day or two over 5 weeks, couldn't/wouldn't want to anymore....ball doesn't leave any marks on the face...
