Title: Spraying a helmet...
Post by: Dan W on February 21, 2012, 03:08:10 PM
I have a spare Mas lid that I've ripped the fabric off thus leaving the shell.

I'd like to paint it white for that retro 80's England look!

How would one go about it? Sanding/Priming/Spraying?

best person to speak to would probably be ayrtek. thats if hes able to give away any secrets

id imagine you could have issues sanding/prep and getting a half decent finish on it.

i think you also would have to be careful with what you put on it. some paints could have an affect on the shell? im just guessing but worth checking out. whats the shell made of?

I did it with an old helmet i had that i got hit on and it split, so bored one day I sprayed it with red oxide primer, after giving at a light sanding, and it looked okay, I'm sure if you took your time you'd be able to do it.

If u take the cloth off u will find a few dents and pin holes etc which is why they ate cloth covered to mask this.

Should be ok to spray as pretty sure that's what Darren Stevens is wearing in the BPL in his orange colour scheme

I'm not too fussed about this, though may give it a shot at the weekend to pass the time!

To be honest I'm hoping enough layers of White primer should do the job, otherwise I'll do a couple of coats of primer and then a few coats of normal spray paint. Just hope it doesn't finish stupidly tacky or flakey

should be ok but will take about 3-4 days to dry properly

I have done it once, I can't remember it clearly though.I covered the little dents with putty and then gave it a light sanding all over to help paint adhere better and removes excess putty. Then spray painted it with two coats of white and then applied a clear (gloss ?) coat.It was fantastic but bear in mind I did it with the help of a lad who runs an automoblie spray painting facilty. This was done about 10 years ago hence the scratchy memory. All the products were automobile industry quality.

My hero who turned villain, Loved his batting when in full flow. Sadly ended up in the wrong side of things. He is currently issued a warrant for a bounced cheque.
