Title: How do you navigate the forum?
Post by: tim2000s on February 23, 2012, 02:18:05 PM
As part of the ongoing review into the performance of the forum, we're trying to understand how people navigate around it, as, as some of you will have experienced in the past with search, different techniques have different impacts on the database.

If you could answer the following questions, it would be appreciated, and if you have any other comments about how you navigate around, that would also  be helpful!

1. When you have logged in, what's the first page you go to? e.g. Show Unread Topics, messages, Home, Show New Replies to your posts...

2. Once you have read a topic, what do you normally do next? e.g. Return to your previous page, Show Unread Topics, go to the home page, etc...

3. What navigation technique do you least use? e.g. I almost never go to the forum home page

4. How often (times per week) do you use the search function?

Thanks Guys!

This.

After doing this then go to home/index page and go to For Sale section.

Search perhaps 3 times a week tops.

Only go through unread topics and after some time click again unread topics, it gives me the latest unread ones and not the ones I already went through some time back.

Always 'show unread topics' then the same again. Very rarely the home page, unless I'm looking for a topic that I know is in an advertisers section.

i tend to keep an eye out on the unread posts section as a first point of call. if im online all day ill just keep an eye on the recent posts with the odd look at the unread posts section.

think both are helpful.

search function wise i used it alot when i first joined and now its only every now and then.

Rarely use the search function

First thing I do is check replies to my posts and then unread posts

Are people put off of the search bar because of the problems it had previously?

I do the unread posts link.
Also search on which members are purchasing too many decent bats, and so far in 2012 that's Sherpa!  ;)

Always first check Recent Unread Topics.  If it's been a while since I've looked and there's loads on there I might look at Show New Replies to my Posts.  Pretty much never use the search function.

I usually read the Recent Psots and then go to Sale/Swap thread.. after that I go to home page and then read posts which has Last Post as "Today". I don't use the website much (5-10 times every 5 minutes ;))

The new Google Analytics is quite helpful for this and shows where people clicked/what the visitors flow etc

It is, but requires a significant rework of the site PHP.
