Hi all
Just had a net with my new bat which is a shorter blade longer handle combo, 1.5 inch shoulder drop and found that my grip wasnt as strong so I ended up gripping the bat lower to combat this and ended up having a hell of a lot more control on the bat and in turn started to bat better.....
A question for the coaches and boys with these bats.....
How would you advise where to hold the bat...
I've already asked buzz and he told me to just get on with it and stop being a tart :)

hold it where you feel comfortable. If you hold it too far down you lose the benefit of the LH in swinging the wood at greater speed. I could get on with the shoulder drop/LH configuration but felt happier with a standard SH.

I guess the lower middle is the cause of the problem, I'd say revert to a standard blade, holding the handle lower defeats the object of the design, or simply use a lighter version. You want to be in the normal stance when batting, having to crouch lower or having a bat with 1.5 inches less length in you normal stance is not a good idea and will be the result when gripping lower.

Buzz got it in one ;)!
I'll let you know what I think tonight when I use my newly acquired stick
-
I'd say, as a user of longer bats in general, that it doesn't matter. Buzz is right you tart ;)
-
I tend to line it up next to my normal bats find where I grip on those then put a bit of tape around shorter blade so I know where to put hands

Very structured...!

Its the slightly heavier pickup that i believe is the problem, as theres less mass in the top of the blade which usually balances the bat to better affect. I know by holding the bat slightly lower you wont get the benefit of the greater swing speed which the design promotes but on the other hand im still getting a bigger mass behind the ball for the given weight....
i also agree using a slightly lighter one may be the solution

Pick it up as you would an axe

Pick it up as you would an axe
With menace in your eyes and whilst screaming "Death to all trees!"?
-
Haha!... No just how I was always told to hold it..
-
I always hold the handle at the very top when wielding my goose ;)
-
This is a good question..
I used my Newbery Uzi in both formats last year and it worked well for me although I took a few high balls on the handle. I loved having the weight behind the ball when freeing up my arms and I don't think my stance was really affected or where I held my bat, which was how i'd normally hold a SH bat, because I'm 5'9 in height.
Now I have a real dilemma as am dying to try out a few SH bats which I've acquired for this season and keep wondering if I should revert back after my most successful batting season to date with my Uzi!?! Why change back and if not what should I do with all my lovely bats? Oh dear....
-
Canners, I force myself to hold my LH/SB bats as high up the handle as possible - however, I am a proper batsman, and not a tart.
-
Surely if you are a proper batsman you don't need to force yourself, it would come naturally?
-
No, all proper batsmen I have seen attempt to hold your bastardized demon-spawn bat design at the bottom of the handle at first, and I have to correct them.
ergo, if I am a proper batsman, I make the same mistake!
-
Fattus is this a bit like you forcing yourself to kiss girls and not boys ;) x
-
I'll kiss anyone if they're buying cake! "Never Go Home Alone" that's my motto!
Have you addressed the tart situation?
-

Canners 2 grips 2 different colours, where the handle shoulder wotsit [I know I'm getting techie] should be, cut and tape it overlay the other grip tape it.. problem solved....
As for the Tigger outfit, Fattus is wearing a tiger print mankini he said as a treat for Talisman

Gave my shorter blade longer handle stick a go tonight and it seemed to be okay for me!
I marked on the grip where i normally hold the bat and gripped it there and it didn't feel to foreign at all, and the benefits of a little extra leverage seemed to be good too! Nice smashes over the top of the bowler felt good
