Title: refaceing a bat
Post by: FvanN on March 22, 2012, 08:14:25 AM
Last night I was talking to a chap about a bat that had the face removed by a few mm and then had another face applied to it (so i guess something like a laminated bat but on the face of the bat and only very thin).

Anybody know how this is done and are there many bats like this out there?

Is can be tricky with the bow on the modern bat, simply remove handle, plane face, glue new face, press and rehandle. Price tends to be about £80 to £100.

Interesting topic. Certainly a tricky operation I imagine.

Would this not constitute a laminate?
Why would you want this done? For cosmetic or performance?
Would the new face have resiliance if we're talking only a few mm?

Most interested in your thoughts Mike.

Due to bow the laminated face will differ in thickness and the base layer may well be compressed and you may find no performance whatsoever or stunning "ping". Rehandled bats are weaker in that area.

so not really worth doing?  better to patch up the existing bat?

I've got one, the face was removed from a inch or so from bellow the splice and an inch up from the toe, I'm actually looking to get rid of it, it pings amazingly! send me a message if your interested to see some pics!

So it's a castle lam? Simmy had one a bit ago, was a decent stick as I recall

So its hit and miss if you get a good one, I'm always a little worried that the glue won't hold and it will fall apart. Think when I have some spare cash I might have to get one to try
